Financial Accountant job summary

Working as part of the central team Finance team and alongside schools ensuring effective financial control, proper accounting practice and accurate reporting of the Trust’s resources. Supporting the Trust Finance Director with Trust reporting including preparation and submission returns.

Main Responsibilities

Organisation

  • Build strong and effective professional relationships with all stakeholders across the Trust.
  • Manage the Finance Staff including Senior Finance Officer, Finance Officers and Finance Assistants, ensuring all staff receive annual appraisals and training where appropriate.
  • Provide financial data and support the Finance Director, COO/EFO and the Trust Leadership Team.
  • Attend management team meetings and school local governing body meetings by invitation, to advise on and contribute to discussions relating to finance/administration matters.

Financial Management and Compliance

  • Analyse and evaluate Trust Balance Sheet investigating anomalies, producing a monthly balance sheet reconciliation for Trust reporting purposes.
  • Produce a monthly cash flow report, highlighting any significant variances.
  • Download and import monthly bank statements and reconcile against transactions in the Trust’s accounting system. Investigate and challenge unallocated amounts and create amendments where necessary. Send balanced accounts to CFO for approval. Maintain bank mandates.
  • Maintain the Trust’s Asset register and chart of accounts for accounting purposes.
  • Collate end of year information for Trust Accountants and Auditors. Liaise with Accountants and Finance Director with DfE reporting.
  • Monitor and report on all Schools Capital Funding including SCA funding.
  • Assist and advise on procurement and how to ensure best value for money/
  • Carry out checks on the weekly BACS payment runs for the Trust.
  • Provide support and Trust month end procedures and production of annual statutory accounts and other returns.
  • Posting of key financial journals.
  • Promoting awareness and understanding of financial procedures and regulations to ensure effective financial control and good practice financial management across the Trust and all its schools.
  • Maintain and continuously improve all systems and procedures to ensure that financial transactions are recorded and reported completely and accurately, with the effective operation of all financial controls.

Resources

  • Operate relevant equipment/ICT packages (e.g. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, databases, spreadsheets, internet) including financial accounting and budgeting packages.
  • Ensure compliance with financial, auditing and reporting requirements of funding bodies, Companies House and the Charities Commission.
