What skills and experience we're looking for
Francis Barber Pupil Referral Unit has a vacancy for a Subject Leader for English and Literacy. This role will suit an aspiring or experienced English Subject Leader who is looking for an exciting opportunity to lead the whole school in a core subject.
We are seeking a well-qualified, committed and passionate Subject Leader. You will need to be committed to supporting young people to rebuild their self-esteem and resilience, through leading an inspiring curriculum. You will be able to teach high quality and engaging lessons and you will lead a team committed to raising the achievement of all our pupils and ensuring pupils achieve excellent results in GCSE and Functional Skills exams.
What the school offers its staff
At Francis Barber, the English and Literacy curriculum is tailored to meeting the specific learning needs of pupils. At Francis Barber everyone is a teacher of Literacy, and all pupils, both Key Stage 3 and 4, take part in a reading programme which aims to re-engage them with reading whole books and improve their literacy skills. The programme currently includes Faster Read reading sessions, Rapid Read support, author visits and a reading rewards programme. The successful candidate will have a good understanding of how to help pupils improve their literacy skills and be able to plan appropriate individualised programmes for additional support.
Francis Barber is a large, friendly and inclusive PRU that prides itself on helping the young people we work with to achieve their full potential. It is also a complex PRU, catering for a number of specific groups of young people that include: pupils who have been permanently excluded, those who are dual registered, pupils who have recently moved into the area, and some who have not regularly attended school in the past.
Staff at Francis Barber are committed to creating a reflective and considerate community where pupils can learn in a safe and secure environment. We value the individual strengths which pupils and staff contribute to the development of positive and co-operative relationships. We are a strong, diverse team that includes teachers, mentors, keyworkers, clinical CAMHS practitioners and a social worker, all of whom work together to help our young people manage their behaviour and emotions. Staff CPD this year has focused on embedding a whole school trauma informed approach.
