We are an all-age specialist school for cognition and learning – a community special school based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, UK. Our pupils have a wide range of learning needs including complex moderate, severe or profound learning difficulties or disabilities. We are registered for pupils aged between 2 and 19 years and many have a broad range of additional special educational needs such as autism, physical disabilities, complex medical needs or social emotional mental health issues, but all of which are combined with learning needs.
Pupils aged up to 16 (up to the end of KS4) are educated on our main school site on Barry’s Lane, Scarborough. Some of our younger pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties are based in our specialist, interactive resource centre (The Learning Zone) with Falsgrave Community Centre, 700 yards away from the main site.
Sixth Form students have their own discrete provision across town, based on Lady Edith’s Drive, just over 2 miles from the main site. This opened in September 2017 and offers spacious accommodation in a more adult learning environment.
Between the various school sites, and within the local community, our pupils and students benefit from excellent facilities. For example, our Learning Zone at Falsgrave Community Centre has been developed as an interactive learning environment which serves as a base for some pupils, and is used for clubs during the school holidays. A short walk from our main school site is the Scarborough Sports Village with state of the art facilities including swimming pool. We also regularly use Scarborough Rugby Club.
Each year the school hires a beach chalet, and the curriculum in the summer term is designed around regular access to the beach. The school has a hydrotherapy pool on the main site with a state of the art light and sound system. We share this beyond the school day with pupils from other schools. Springhead School is a ‘Specialist School’ for Cognition and Learning. We are funded by the Local Authority, with three other special schools across North Yorkshire, to run the Severe / Complex Learning Difficulties Outreach Support for mainstream schools, supporting them to meet the learning needs of pupils with increasingly complex learning difficulties.
Families of any prospective pupils are warmly welcome to contact the school to arrange a visit.
