What skills and experience we're looking for

The person

You will have significant experience of education or corporate governance, and demonstrate sound business judgement, effective communication and interpersonal skills, and a willingness to work as part of a team to help us achieve our aims. We will expect you to be ‘challenging’, but at the same time respectful of the views of others, and to adopt a constructive, collegiate, and supportive approach to this unique role.

We wish our Members to beas inclusive as possible and effectively representthe broad, diverse communities we serve; therefore, we would welcome applications from the broadest spectrum of backgrounds.

Members will be expected to commit approximately 10 hours per academic year to meetings – this time commitment includes the reading and preparation required for such meetings. Meetings are held in East and West Sussex and you may choose to attend either in person or remotely, via Teams.

Members have a unique role. Members hold the Board of Trustees of the University of Brighton Academies Trust to account for the effective governance of the Trust – they are the guardians of the governance of the Trust. Members assess if the Board of Trustees is performing well; they ensure that the purpose of the Trust is being met and its charitable objects are being fulfilled – in summary, they consider whether the pupils in the Trust are receiving a good quality of education and whether the Trust is spending public money wisely.

The St Leonards Academy

Here at The St Leonards Academy, we have a clear vision of what creates successful learners. And we know how to implement it.
Our students are enthusiastic about learning because we make sure we supply excellent teaching and exceptional pastoral care.

As well as focussing on academic achievement we are equally committed to the improvement of our students' character through the promotion of our five virtues of kindness, respect, honesty, resilience and self-discipline.

They have opportunities galore to develop these virtues through our personal development curriculum and our enrichment programme that offers everything from rock-climbing to formal debating. Above all, they take pride in themselves, their school, and their learning.
