Head of Art job summary

We are seeking to appoint a Head of Art from September 2024 or sooner for our oversubscribed school, Bedford Free School. This is a truly career defining opportunity to make a real difference through your teaching at an incredible school with a national reputation for excellence. You will work as part of a team, and closely with the trust education team and school staff, to ensure Bedford Free School continues to be an excellent place for pupils to learn and staff to work.

We take workload seriously. We have no unwieldy and impossible marking policies, no written reports or endless meetings. We respect teachers as experts in their subject and prioritise giving time for departments to discuss what they are teaching, why and how.

Our pupils’ behaviour is excellent, supported by clear systems and routines, including centrally delivered, same-day whole-school sanctions where necessary.

All of this means that you will be able to dedicate your time and energy into further improving the curriculum, teaching and outcomes in Art.

Art is a very popular GCSE subject at Bedford Free School. There are four GCSE groups studying the AQA Fine Art specification and last year the department achieved its best ever results. The last few years have seen significant developments of the KS3 curriculum, which places an emphasis on pupils learning and remembering core artistic knowledge, carefully sequenced, across a breadth of topics. The department also offers a range of exciting extracurricular opportunities for students, including trips and an annual exhibition of work.

At BFS we value and respect subject specialism and strive to create the environment where teachers can get on and teach the subjects which they love and are expert in. You would benefit from the existing strong, well-resourced, knowledge-rich curriculum already in place for art and would be expected to lead all aspects of the department’s efforts to deliver a fantastic curriculum. You would also benefit from the opportunity to work on the curriculum with colleagues across the trust.

With waiting lists in each year group and GCSE results placing us amongst the top schools for pupil progress in the country, we are a hugely popular school. Demand for places is very high as parents want the combination of a BFS education and our distinctive small school feel for their children.

We’re looking for people who want to be the best. You will be excellent in the classroom and an inspiring character who is willing to lead by example but will also contribute positively to wider school life. Most of all, you will be clear that education is a great leveller and work hard to help us achieve our goal of preparing every student to go to university.

Our values are aspiration, honesty and respect and our vision is to create a family of exceptional schools, within which students are empowered and supported to achieve extraordinary outcomes. We currently run five schools in Bedfordshire – Bedford Free School (secondary, Ofsted outstanding), Houstone School (secondary, not yet inspected), Elstow School (primary, Ofsted good), Queen’s Park Academy (primary, Ofsted good) and Laburnum Primary School (not yet inspected). Our pupils will leave our schools prepared for a fulfilling life, including the opportunity to go to a great university and pursue the career of their choice. To achieve this, our network of schools teach an academic, knowledge-rich curriculum enhanced by an entitlement to enrichment for all.

We achieve our goals through the recruitment and retention of the best colleagues and school leaders, developing talent through sector-leading professional learning. We foster collaborative work, both across our trust and our extensive network of professional contacts, to ensure our staff can learn from and contribute significantly to the wider educational system.

We believe great staff make a great school, so we look after our colleagues well. We value hard work, but we do all we can to identify and eliminate unnecessary workload that could result in burnout.

We invest heavily in professional learning, which alongside support and coaching from our senior leadership team and access to expertise across Advantage Schools, means you can develop to be your very best. There is a programme of training available to all staff at different stages of their career.

We have no unwieldly marking policies; our pupils behaviour is impeccable, supported by the same day whole school sanctions where necessary and Senior Leaders have a very high profile that you are supported to develop.

Thank you for your interest in teaching at BFS. We strongly encourage prospective candidates to come and visit the school, to speak to staff and pupils and see things for themselves.

For a confidential discussion about the position, contact Esther Logan, PA to the Principal on 01234 332290 or email elogan@bedfordfreeschool.co.uk

Early applications are encouraged as we reserve the right to close this post should a suitable candidate apply.

Set up in 2012 by local teachers and parents, Bedford Free School exists to offer families a choice in Bedford.

Bedford Free School is a unique school with a fantastic educational offer. We really do believe that our pupils can go on to achieve extraordinary things. In our young history, we have proved they can and we are now one of the highest performing secondary schools not only in the area, but in the country.

BFS is a small school of only around 500 pupils, so staff get to know each pupil as an individual and we have a family feel. This allows us to encourage, demand and collectively strive for academic and personal success.

We believe that all pupils deserve a ‘grammar-school’ style education, with access to an academic curriculum, strong discipline, high expectations and access to highly selective universities, and a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
