What skills and experience we're looking for
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding teacher of Business Studies and Economics, with a passion for promoting the subjects both inside and outside of the curriculum, to lead the continued growth of this thriving department. The successful candidate will be an excellent classroom practitioner and, ideally, have some experience of curriculum development and leadership.
As well as a Business Foundation course in Year 9, the department offers Business Studies at GCSE and A-Level and Economics at A-Level. Results were very strong in 2022: in Business Studies, of the 77 GCSE candidates, 52% gained a grade 7+ and at A-Level 80% of the 44 candidates gained A*, A or B. In Economics, there were 37 entries and a 65% A*-B pass rate. The successful applicant would be expected to teach Business Studies to GCSE and at least one of Business Studies or Economics to A-Level. It is a well-resourced department with desk-top computers in each of the three classrooms.
What the school offers its staff
Educating approximately 1200 students, The Bishop’s Stortford High School provides a highly successful single-sex education for boys in Years 7 to 11 and has a large, thriving co-educational sixth form, with over one hundred girls on roll. We have achieved a positive Progress 8 score every year since the measure was introduced, +0.43 in 2022, which compares very favourably to a national average for boys of -0.21. At A-Level, we had a 74% A* - B pass rate in 2022. We have a strong ethos, based on high expectations and standards for all, a committed and supportive staff who deliver high quality, engaging lessons and well-behaved students with excellent attitudes to learning.
We are due to re-locate to a brand new ‘state of the art’ school building in 2024, which is currently under construction on a new site less than half a mile from our current location. This exciting project will provide us with a fantastic new learning environment, supported by innovative technology, and huge opportunities for the future.
The school provides a formidable range of extra-curricular activities to students which include numerous overseas trips, languages exchanges, cultural visits, first class fixture cards in all major sports, a diverse and high-quality music and drama programme, DofE, debating, public speaking and much more. The school places a strong emphasis on staff development and the appointed candidate can expect to gain significant enjoyment and professional fulfilment from working here.
