Head of Business Studies job summary

Head of Business Studies - Beechwood School

MPS/UPS (Fringe) + TLR 2c (Required for September 2026 or January 2027)

We require an inspiring teacher with the highest of expectations to lead this popular and oversubscribed curriculum area. This is an exciting opportunity to lead our Business Studies Department, and applications are sought from a colleague with a passion for their subject area and the ability to channel this passion into innovative and stimulating teaching.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate:

  • the ability to secure high standards of achievement;
  • the ability to give clear direction to teaching and learning across the Business Studies curriculum area;
  • excellent teaching skills;
  • high level organisational and ICT skills;
  • a track record of success at KS4 and KS5;
  • effective communication skills, with the capacity to lead and work collaboratively as part of a team;
  • the potential to become an outstanding middle leader.

We offer a knowledge-rich curriculum that is sequenced to support all students to retain and use knowledge. We support all our teachers to become quickly established through our instructional coaching programme for new staff. Our classrooms are disruption free, with staff on walk during lessons to ensure that there are no disruptions in lessons and the corridors. We are relentlessly focused on improving the quality of teaching and the expertise for all of our teachers. We have dedicated time in the school calendar for co-planning and subject specific CPD in subject teams, this has resulted in reduced workload as our teachers do not plan lessons individually. We take workload reduction seriously. Our students work hard after school to complement the brilliant teaching that takes place in lessons. We use online platforms to support spaced retrieval at home and teach our students about effective learning strategies. Our GCSE results have confirmed to show improvements, so we are confident our approach is effective.

We will consider applications from current experienced practitioners looking to enhance their leadership and those colleagues wishing to develop further.

Beechwood School is committed to flexible working and we welcome applications from colleagues who may wish to be considered in a part-time/job share capacity. We are, of course, committed to safeguarding the welfare of our students and staff and will conduct all necessary DBS checks as part of our recruitment process. We reserve the right to appoint before the closing date for an exceptional candidate.

For further details and an application pack please contact Jyoti Kumar, Trust HR Officer on 01753 520473 or via email to j.kumar@beechwood.slough.sch.uk. Informal discussions and visits to the school are welcome. As part of our due diligence checks, the school will carry out an online search for short listed candidates.

Beechwood School is a co-educational secondary school located in the Britwell area of Slough and was established in 1982 when the former Haymill and Warren Field Secondary schools merged on the Warren Field site. The current school was built under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) scheme and completed in 2007. Students and staff are proud of the large and extensive facility the school operates in.

In October 2016 Beechwood School and Herschel Grammar School joined together as founding partners of The Schelwood Multi-Academy Trust. Our Trust is an exciting and innovative partnership of two c-oeducational secondary schools - Herschel Grammar is a selective school and Beechwood a community school both founding partners.

At both schools our aim is for our students to have a great and memorable educational experience via access to a curriculum that supports outstanding learning, development and achievement in both academia and personal development. Our school communities are diverse academically, socially, culturally indeed in every dimension and we celebrate this.

All staff, students, governors, trustees and members share a commitment to the values and ethos of the Trust and this ensures we put our young people at the very heart of every decision that is made. We ensure that our young people develop the skills, qualities and attributes to enable them to pursue and enjoy successful and fulfilling lives, both professionally and personally. Our young people’s happiness and success is what drives us.

We are committed to providing equality of opportunity and to ensure that all members of the Trust school community experience an ethos of fairness, justice and dignity.

We recognise, welcome and respect diversity.

Beechwood's Mission Statement
To provide an exceptional educational experience for all, where potential is nurtured and responsible citizens created.

Everything that we do will be built around three values: Kindness, Respect and Excellence . Our expectations as a school are high because we know the potential each of our students has. If they make themselves proud and our parents are proud of their achievements, then we have done our job.

Our mission is to provide an exceptional educational experience for all, where potential is nurtured and responsible citizens created. Across the school we strive to embody this in every aspect of each student's educational journey.

Every moment is a learning moment : from Year 7 to Year 13; from the moment students arrive in the morning, until the moment they leave at the end of the day. Ultimately preparing our students to lead successful and fulfilling lives beyond the Beechwood School community.
