Head of Chemistry job summary
We are:
A lively and purposeful co-educational, comprehensive state boarding school for children aged 7 to 18 years, with 600 flexi-boarders and 500 full boarders. The school has been highly sought after for many years, with very high levels of interest again for September 2022. This is due to a wide range of factors including its facilities, academic results, standards of teaching, pastoral care, the boarding and flexi-boarding environment, wide range of trips and co-curricular activities and the resultant attitudes of its pupils.
We offer:
• Strong induction programme
• Free accommodation, set in 260 acres of beautiful parkland, may be available in exchange for boarding and co-curriculum duties
• A well-managed and very successful department
• On-site parking
• Ideal location to work and live, close to the A23 and M25
We are looking for an exceptional Leader of Chemistry who can provide highly effective and innovative leadership of the Chemistry department in the senior school, to ensure that all our pupils make excellent progress and inspire students to have a passion for the subject.
The Science department is one of the largest in the school, with 7 fully equipped laboratories, 2 Science Preparatory Rooms, Staff workroom and HOD office. There is a very good ethos of cooperative and supportive working as part of a team and there is excellent organisation between teaching and support staff.
In Science pupils achieve high outcomes at GCSE & A level. At GCSE pupils achieve results higher than the national average in 9-7, 9-4 and 9-1, with P8 scores within Separate science of above 1 and Combined science above 0.8. At A level typically 80% or above achieve A*- C, higher than the national averages. In our recent Ofsted report the department was commended on ‘knowing just what they want pupils to learn and in what order’ with subject teachers ‘explaining subject matter and checking pupils’ understanding well’.
The school’s approach to GCSE leads to a large uptake in the 6th form. There are 2 classes for Biology, Chemistry and Physics in both Year 12 and Year 13. We have a good number of pupils going on to study STEM related degrees.
We are looking for:
The successful candidate will be:
• Passionate about the teaching of Chemistry
• An excellent practitioner
• Enthusiastic about his/her own professional development
