Head of English Department job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and inspirational Head of Department to lead our effective and committed English Department focused on delivering excellent lessons for all students we serve, helping them to achieve excellent results and progress.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly motivated learning community of approximately 1000 students (including 200 in the Sixth Form) where we have a deep rooted belief in professional development, in exchange for hard work and a commitment to the school, we will ensure that you are prepared for the next stage in your teaching career.

At St. Joseph’s we challenge our teachers to, ‘love the children, and to let them know that they are loved,’ through everything we do with our students to ‘Unlock the Belief’ in themselves and others. To support teachers in this mission we support teachers by:

  • We have a behaviour system that lets teachers teach
  • We treat teachers like surgeons with weekly CPD and training
  • We have small class sizes and give teachers time to prepare
  • All teachers are included in our reading and electives programme
  • We work hard for the children and we care for each other like a family

Designated “Outstanding” (Section 48) in November 2018, St Joseph’s is a school where “pupils make outstanding progress. St Joseph’s is well known for being a great school to teach in, where the students are highly aspirational”.

In 2016 the school was described as having a “deep seated conviction and moral purpose that all pupils have the right to an excellent education which drives a positive culture in the school”. Our recent Progress 8 score in 2023 was +0.4 .We are proud to say that “a feeling of warmth and love permeates St Joseph’s” (Ofsted 2022) because we’re keen to ensure that “relationships are key … and staff develop very positive relationships with pupils so that they understand what is going on for them and their families…”

We believe in professional development. In exchange for hard work and a commitment to the school, we will ensure that you are prepared for the next stage in your teaching career.

All members of staff will require an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check and this is a condition of employment at the school.

Please download an application pack from our website or telephone the school for more information.
