Head of English job summary

Ringwood School are seeking a well-qualified, enthusiastic Head of English to build on the excellent work of the current English leadership team and to take the English Department onto the next stage of its journey. The English team is a highly qualified, effective and stable team, who deliver high quality lessons at KS3, 4 and 5.

This is an exciting opportunity for a middle leader to make their mark, by leading our large English team to achieving the best outcomes from our students, through the continued development of the high-quality pedagogy embedded across the department. We are looking for a colleague with a proven track record of raising student outcomes to not only maximise performance but also engender a love of English and of reading across the school. We are aiming for our students to both be highly competent readers and also for them to engage and enjoy a wide range of literature. We run both English Language and English Literature A-Level courses and we hope to attract a post holder who is ambitious to attract even more students to pursue English in the sixth form.

Based in the beautiful New Forest, Ringwood School is a non-selective, mixed secondary school of 1550 students, including 280 in the Sixth Form. We recognise the critical importance of the English curriculum in opening our students’ eyes to a whole world outside their particular corner of Southern England.

We offer:
 the opportunity to be integral to school improvement, both within English and beyond at a time that suits you for your career;
 well-considered professional development and a wide range of professional opportunities, including significant leadership development opportunities;
 excellent career progression opportunities given our strong track record of school to school support;
 a supportive, committed and experienced team of English specialists to work with;
 a high level of support for all new staff;
 a workplace with a high level of professional trust, focused on the wellbeing of staff and students;

You will:
 be ambitious for all students in your subject area and have a commitment and enthusiasm to give young people the best possible start in life;
 be able to demonstrate how you have improved outcomes in the past;
 be an excellent classroom practitioner, who is experienced in teaching English at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5;
 be experienced and pragmatic enough to juggle the dual demands of leadership and teaching;
 be committed to working collaboratively with colleagues, students and parents;
 be confident in your ability to support and develop colleagues;
 use your excellent subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding to develop a high quality English curriculum and ensure its successful delivery;
 be optimistic and cheerful.
