Head of English (Wider SLT) job summary

We are looking for a Head of English – and member of the school’s Wider SLT - in a school that offers excellent opportunities for professional development. Twyford Church of England High School, an Ofsted outstanding school with a thriving Sixth Form, is one of four Twyford Trust schools in a growing multi academy trust. The school offers comprehensive T&L and CPD opportunities for all teachers. The role is an excellent one for an experienced post-holder who is ambitious to move senior leadership and who supports the ethos and the standards of the school.

This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative teacher and curriculum planner with middle leadership experience who is ready to take on departmental leadership. The successful candidate will have responsibility for building the department in terms of curriculum planning, teaching and learning and progress monitoring. The role has been placed on the WSLT because of the value placed by the school on outstanding English teaching. The post-holder will share best practice in teaching and learning across the school – particularly focussing on the teaching of literacy. The Head of English therefore will ensure that the quality of teaching and learning in the department is consistently high and will contribute to the development of a culture of sharing best practice

The successful candidate will lead a team of strong deliverers including a number of existing post holders. She/he will be an outstanding classroom practitioner with an ability to lead training and will be an experienced curriculum and assessment planner, with proven experience of achieving outstanding student outcomes across a range of abilities. She/he must be confident in analysing student performance data and be enthused by the prospect of leading and managing others to achieve common goals. The new post-holder will be responsible for the leadership of literacy provision across school, ensuring coherence of departmental strategy for the development of students as effective Readers, Writers and Speakers and supporting implementation of consistent strategies across the curriculum.

Applications are welcomed from exceptional candidates with strong experience with a proven record of sustained success.

In the case of existing Heads of English, there may be opportunity for further pay progression and CPD within the NPQ framework.

The Trust also welcomes applications from ambitious and able applicants with experience as key stage leads. Aspects of the role and remuneration may be adjusted accordingly in this context.
