Head of Geography job summary

The post will involve supporting:

The Learning Experience of pupils by:

a) Teaching mainly Geography across the full range of age and ability, including KS5, following departmental schemes of work;

b) Contributing to the development of departmental schemes of work and assessment;

c) Setting and marking homework according to school and departmental policies;

d) Integrating the development of key skills (ICT, literacy and numeracy) into their teaching;

e) Monitoring and assessing students according to departmental and whole school policies;

f) Contributing to departmental meetings;

g) Maintaining a safe and attractive learning environment;

h) Effective use of student data to support their learning.

The Head of Geography will be responsible to a line manager in the Senior Leadership Team for the management of learning and teaching throughout the department. This will involve:

Head of Geography - Leadership of a team and development of staff by:

a) Managing and deploying department staff;

b) Supervising and monitoring the work of department colleagues;

c) Arranging and participating in the staff performance management process, in consultation with the SLT line manager;

d) Planning and recording minutes at regular department meetings;

e) Supporting colleagues in the maintenance of high standards of student behaviour;

f) Establishing and maintaining professional standards within the department;

g) Organising opportunities for colleagues share good practice in a range of ways from observation to the effective sharing of resources;

h) Ensuring that the department keeps up to date with developments within the teaching of their subject;

i) Advising the Headteacher and SLT line manager on the appointment of department staff;

j) Caring for the personal career and development of department staff, Early Career Teachers and Trainee teachers.

Head of Geography - The effective management of resources by:

a) Managing the department budget;

b) Identifying departmental needs (long and short term);

c) Allocating and controlling department equipment, books, stationery, etc to ensure most efficient use and minimum loss or wastage;

d) Preparing orders for resources within an allocated budget;

e) Ensuring that Department rooms and adjoining spaces are maintained as an attractive and safe learning environment.

School-wide activities by:

a) Promoting the school's ethos and equal opportunities policy;

b) Contributing to the further development of whole school policies and practices;

c) Serving as a tutor with responsibilities for student academic tutoring, behaviour, welfare and guidance;

d) Carrying out appropriate school duties, including general lunchtime duties on a voluntary basis;

e) Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of students for whom they have responsibility or with whom they come into contact;

f) Fostering business and community links;

g) Being willing to contribute to enrichment programmes.
