Head of Geography job summary

About the role: Strood Academy has a rare opportunity for a talented and creative Head of Geography to join our department from September 2021. We are seeking to appoint an inspiring teacher who will play a pivotal role in the progress and drive of this department. You’ll be joining the department at an exciting time as the improvements we are making are gaining momentum. Geography is taught as a discrete subject to all pupils in Years 7-9 as part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. In years 10 and 11, pupils who opt for Geography (usually between 100 and 120) follow the Eduqas specification. Results have steadily improved over the last 3 years but there is still scope for continued improvement.

The Head of Geography must demonstrate aspects of leadership such as:

Up to date knowledge and understanding necessary to undertake the leading of a Geography department
A record of successful teaching as an outstanding classroom practitioner
Excellent team member
Energy, positivity, enthusiasm
Prepared to go the extra mile to enable students to do as well as possible
Committed to school improvement
High expectations of self and others
Commitment to working for equality of opportunity
Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills
A willingness to learn and ask for support
An excellent communicator
To design an engaging curriculum that allows pupils to progress as Geographers.
Being innovative and flexible, ready to collaborate within and across departments and subject specialities

Act as a ‘role model’ of good practice in areas of the role, including effective teaching.
The basis of this role is full-time, permanent and a negotiable TLR is offered depending on experience.

Working for Strood Academy: Since opening in 2009, our academy has transformed the educational opportunities and outcomes for girls and boys in Strood. The improvement in academic performance has been driven by a talented and committed workforce, the hard work of our students, and support from parents and our community. Our new buildings in Carnation Road were designed in partnership with Nicholas Hare and built by BAM as our main contractor at a cost of £26m. They opened in September 2012 and have outstanding learning environments and outside play areas as well as fantastic sports facilities.
