Head of Geography job summary

We have an outstanding opportunity for a highly effective and motivated experienced Geography teacher to lead a vibrant, successful department at the core of our friendly and forward thinking Humanities Faculty.

Are you an inspirational and enthusiastic Geography Teacher looking for a new challenge? Do you have the teaching skills and personality required to motivate and energise learners? Are you passionate about the Geography Curriculum and nurturing the next generation of Geographers?

This is an awesome and exciting time to join our enthusiastic, passionate Geography team as their leader. The team are highly motivated and dedicated to improving learners’ outcomes, and as such have been developing a knowledge-rich curriculum, rooted in research. As Head of Geography, your focus will be on leading a team of Geography experts (all of whom studied at the University of Birmingham) and supporting them in developing their Geographical knowledge and classroom practice. You will also have the opportunity to work collaboratively with the Head of Religious Studies, Head of Humanities Faculty and a Lead Practitioner.

As we stand firm in our belief that staff well-being is a priority we do not unnecessarily add to workload or bring about multiple initiatives at the drop of a hat. Everything we do is rooted in research with a clear evidence base. As such we have: regular teaching & learning CPD following the Walkthrus programme and Instructional Coaching, a ‘feedback’ policy; not a marking policy (no need for repetitive comments in learners’ books), a clear focus on teachers as experts and homework which is mainly auto-marked multiple choice questions.

The successful candidate will be capable of inspiring learners through their passion for the subject and have an excitement and drive for teaching and learning and a desire to make a difference to leaners’ achievement. Due to Washwood Heath Academy being an All through Academy, there is potential to teach learners in Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 and work with colleagues in the Primary phase to develop a better understanding of how learners develop geographical skills in Key Stage 1 and 2.

Washwood Heath Academy is a relatively new All Through Academy (Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form) in the East of Birmingham. This is a fantastic opportunity to join an established Geography team and contribute to a Faculty that seeks to provide a first class education for all of its learners. In order for all learners to achieve academic excellence, we deliver a knowledge-rich curriculum where teachers are the experts and their role it is to convey their knowledge and expertise to pupils.
