We are looking for a Head of History in a school that offers excellent opportunities for professional development. Twyford Church of England High School, an Ofsted outstanding school with a thriving Sixth Form, is one of four Twyford Trust schools, that offers exciting development opportunities and good promotion prospects for talented and energetic teachers who support the ethos of our schools. The school offers comprehensive T&L and CPD opportunities for all teachers.
The History Department comprises 5 full-time and 2 part-time staff, including the Head of Department, and works closely with the Geography Department under the leadership of the SLT link for Humanities. The school offers a wide-ranging History curriculum – at GCSE students follow the AQA specification, studying World War II and The Holocaust, the Era of the Cold War, Health and the People, Russia 1914-39 and Life in Elizabethan England. The A level course follows the AQA specification and focuses on The Tudors 1485 – 1603 and Germany (Democracy and Nazism) 1918 – 1945. Schemes of work and related assessments are designed to ensure students are engaged and enthused to study History at A Level and beyond.
The new post-holder will be joining a small and successful team, with 61% of GCSE students achieving 9-7 and 95.5% achieving 9-5 (2019). At A Level in 2019 (with 46 entries) students achieved 41% A*-A, 70% A*-B and 100% A*-E. History is a popular choice at both GCSE and A Level. Average GCSE cohorts are between 80 and 100 students, and 40 – 50 at A Level.
