HEAD OF KS5 MATHS
JOB TITLE: Head of KS5 Maths
BASED AT: Samuel Whitbread Academy
SALARY/GRADE RANGE: MPS / UPS plus a TLR 2B allowance - £4,805.00 per annum
RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of the Maths Department
The Bedfordshire Schools Trust (BEST) is a multi-academy trust providing exceptional education across our community of 10 schools and five nurseries. Since forming in 2016, we have grown significantly into one of the largest single employers in Central Bedfordshire. We now educate more than 5,000 children across the area, from nursery age to advanced level study. It is our aim to grow the BEST in everyone, and everything we do is driven by our values, but our aims can only be achieved if we recruit, retain and develop the highest quality workforce – and we want those we employ to be valued in the workplace. The first five years of BEST has been a real success story – and we are looking forward to an exciting future, too.
Samuel Whitbread Academy is looking to appoint a dedicated, inspirational and passionate Head of KS5 Maths to join a very welcoming, large team in September 2022.
The Maths Department consists of 14 enthusiastic and collaborative staff who have a passion for developing a deep and rich understanding of mathematics within their students.
Outcomes for the Maths Department are strong. Within GCSE we also offer intervention programmes, functional skills for students who find they need further support and the Additional Mathematics GCSE to those students who we would like to develop their understanding past the standard GCSE content.
Over the past three years numbers have increased to 80 applicants for A-Level, with four groups of students within our current Year 12 cohort. Currently, we follow the Edexcel syllabus at A-Level, offering Mathematics and Further Mathematics – teaching applied units within the latter. Within the Department we currently have specialists in Pure, Core Pure, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Mathematics, adding a real depth of understanding and opportunities for our students. For staff themselves, this allows us to offer specific mathematics A-Level CPD where desired.
We are looking forward to welcoming a new member of staff into our close-knit and inspirational team to lead Maths courses and qualifications to our dedicated Sixth Form students.
This role will involve working closely with the students at Samuel Whitbread Academy and you will be engaging in regulated activity with children.

Samuel Whitbread Academy
We offer an exceptional academic and extracurricular experience at Samuel Whitbread Academy in an outstanding learning environment where students are expected to work hard and achieve their best.
In our last Ofsted inspection, we were judged as ‘Good’ with many outstanding features and over the next three years we have set ourselves the target of being Outstanding!
Our GCSE results are amongst the best in the Local Authority. We offer a well-balanced curriculum with plenty of choice to prepare our students for the next stage in their lives. Most of our students continue on to the Sixth Form, which is one of the largest and highest performing in the area - providing students with a huge range of courses designed to match the expectations of universities and employers.
Our pastoral care is exceptional and we have dedicated pastoral support teams for each Year Group. The Academy is also broken down into five houses, named after people who have made a distinctive contribution to our community. These provide the framework for the multitude of different competitions, celebrations and charity events that bring our school community together during the year.
Extra-curricular opportunity is a vital part of our ethos and we expect all of our students to get involved in at least one club or activity. There are a huge number of opportunities ranging from highly competitive sports teams to spectacular drama and musical performances.
We enjoy showing visitors around the school so please take the opportunity to come and see us during the school day, so you can see Samuel Whitbread Academy in action and we can answer any questions you may have.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
