Head of Languages job summary

We are seeking an inspirational Head of Languages to lead our dedicated and expert team of specialists and ensure that languages sit at the very heart of our school community. Whether you are an experienced Head of Department or an ambitious teacher looking for your first step into middle leadership, Robert May’s School offers the autonomy and support to make a definitive impact.

The Opportunity

You will be joining a school with attainment consistently above the national average and, more importantly, a staff culture built on longevity and wellbeing. In this role, you will have the autonomy to:

  • Reimagine KS3: Align our curriculum with the new GCSE specifications, ensuring assessments are accessible, motivating and rigorous.

  • Champion Oracy: Put the spoken word at the centre of every lesson, moving beyond the textbook to create authentic communication.

  • Innovate with EdTech: Lead the way in integrating AI and digital devices to enhance language acquisition and teacher efficiency.

  • Build Bridges: Strengthen our links with local primary schools and our parent community to make languages a visible, celebrated part of local life.

About You

We are looking for a "teacher first" leader, passionate about Languages, with proven ability to deliver French, German or Spanish to GCSE across the full ability range. You will be:

  • A Master of Pedagogy: Someone who loves the craft of the classroom—modelling, questioning and using interactive tools to spark engagement.

  • A Collaborative Leader: You know how to tap into the unique strengths of your team, fostering a culture where resources and best practice ideas are shared freely.

  • Culture-Driven: You bring up-to-date knowledge of the target language(s) and culture, ensuring students understand the why behind their learning, from career paths to global citizenship.

  • Exam Ready: You possess a deep understanding of GCSE criteria and can map out a strategic, gradual development of skills from Year 7 through to Year 11.

Why Choose Us?

  • True Autonomy: Shape the curriculum and lead innovation across French, German and Spanish.

  • Strategic Influence: Collaborate with the Arete Partnership and HIAS networks to stay at the forefront of pedagogy.

  • Student Excellence: Teach well-behaved, motivated students who value education and achieve consistently high outcomes.

We believe that great leaders need a sustainable work-life balance. We provide:

  • Workload Support: Streamlined reporting, centralised processes and a specialist PDL team to keep your focus on teaching and leadership.

  • Tech-Forward Classrooms: High-spec laptops for staff, touch screens in every room and a fully embedded Google platform.

  • Wellbeing First: One dedicated "Wellbeing Day" per year, an active Staff Wellbeing Committee and 24-hour virtual GP access for you and your family.

  • Professional Growth: A bespoke CPD programme tailored for middle and senior leadership pathways.

We would love to show you our school. For an informal discussion or to arrange a visit, please contact Lisa Shackleton, HR Manager, at 01256 702700 or lisa.shackleton@rmays.com.

Note: Early application is highly recommended. We reserve the right to interview and appoint prior to the closing date.
