September 2021 start

‘Typical of virtually all lessons are the strong and respectful relationships between staff and pupils. Pupils come to class ready to learn’ Ofsted 2017

About us

Eskdale School is a successful, popular and growing 11-16 community school situated in Whitby on the North Yorkshire Coast. As a school, we have low staff turnover and high staff retention and our colleagues (and hopefully yours) travel from areas such as Redcar, Guisborough, and Ryedale, as well as from Scarborough and Filey.

We thrive being a smaller than average school (500 on roll) which means as a colleague you will really get to know our students and our wider community family who all subscribe to our ethos of ‘ A place of belonging – a place of inspiration’. Since welcoming our Headteacher in September 2018 we have federated Eskdale School, with our neighbouring secondary school in Whitby. This is beginning to benefit our students and provide wider professional development opportunities for our staff.

We put huge emphasis on professional development, most of it in-house, and are proud of the high number of good and outstanding teachers who work in our school. We are also noted for our ‘can do’ attitude. We are always keen to encourage new and/or established staff make their mark as soon as they are ready.

We are:

• A ‘Good’ school in every area by Ofsted in 2017.

• A school who works collaboratively with our fellow federated Whitby school - Caedmon College.

• A school where British values are at the heart of our curriculum – so that all our students leave school knowing how to conduct themselves in the wider world.

Our opportunity - we know Heads of Maths don’t grow on trees!

Due to internal promotions we have what we believe to be an outstanding opportunity. We are looking to appoint a Head of Maths from September 2021. This is our first Head of Department post we have needed to recruit into externally for many years. You will join our extended leadership team as one of our Associate Senior Leaders

We know that recruiting into a Head of Maths post can be difficult as many maths professionals decide to stay in their current school through natural promotion. Indeed, we have done this successfully ourselves over the last three years. As a small family school within Whitby, we are able to nurture, develop and coach developing/existing leaders. We hope you are intrigued to find out more about us and consider (if needed) relocating to our coastal area – which offers a great balance between work and life styles.

Here at Eskdale we pride ourselves on operating as a true comprehensive, with inclusiveness at the top of our agenda, so we will look to you to engage students whose horizons don’t stretch beyond Whitby and the North Yorkshire Coast due to their circumstances.

You would join and lead a Maths faculty of four which is staffed with Maths specialists who continue to build year on year in terms of outcomes, curriculum and extracurricular options to our students. A key focus for the department is to build on the strengths and successes, and as our new teacher and leader, you will work closely with your fellow Head of Faculty, SLT and your teaching colleagues who will support, develop and challenge you.

As a new teacher and leader, we will invest in your future development as a teaching professional through our ‘Teaching Programme’. We are looking for someone who can grow and further develop into being a highly effective teacher and leader, as well as someone who has the drive and ambition to make sure our students achieve their very best.

Join our team and build a wonderful career in a school you are passionate about with students you love to help learn. To arrange a visit please contact James on the details below.

Our coastal offer and why teaching and living on the coast is great!

We are proud to work alongside our eight other local secondary schools and we believe we have a unique opportunity for colleagues to grow, develop and thrive in their career as part of our coastal community. For more information on our Coastal Offer and how you can make a difference by teaching on the Yorkshire Coast please visit www.teachyc.co.uk

The date of commencement for this post will be September 2021. Interviews will be held as soon as possible after the closing date.

Closing date: Thursday 1st April at 9am

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early should we receive an overwhelming response. All candidates are advised to refer to the job description and person specification before making an application.

For an informal conversation about the role, to arrange a visit and for an application pack please contact James Annetts at Resourcing Solutions (North Yorkshire County Council) at james.annetts@northyorks.gov.uk or call 01609 534939 / 07966261249

We are committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. A Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate will be required for all posts. This post will be subject to enhanced checks as part of our Prevent Duty.

About Eskdale School

I am delighted you are interested in joining the team at Eskdale School. We have a highly ambitious, aspirational group of professionals who are raising standards and significantly improving the life chances of the young people of Whitby and the Yorkshire Coast.

Our motto is ‘A place of belonging – A place of inspiration’ and our aim is that all our students thrive and make good academic progress whilst developing into resilient, confident and respectful young people.

In September 2019 we developed a partnership with Caedmon College where both schools will share a Sixth Form to provide further opportunities for our staff and students to learn and develop.

Eskdale School is a community in which our teaching and support staff are incredibly passionate about teamwork.

Staff morale is high and we have a commitment to recognise individual potential and to provide support, CPD and training for colleagues joining our organization at all levels; you will never feel unsupported or alone in our school.

As a small school we are able to really get to know our students and in many ways this is one of the reasons why we have had very little staff turnover in recent years. My staff tell me they like working here, feel supported and encouraged and value the open door approach we have with parents and the community.

Teaching is one of the best jobs in the world and for any professional who is looking for either their first or next school it is vital you find one that will support you. Myself and our SLT all teach because we enjoy it, and it allows us to continue to develop in the classroom. As an Art Teacher I still get a buzz when a student learns something new.

We are really proud of our school and the progress we are making. Please take the time to come and visit is – we’d love to show you around.

Andy Fyfe (Head teacher)
