Head of Modern Foreign Languages job summary
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, well qualified and ambitious Head of MFL to join a vibrant and rapidly improving school. The successful applicant will be committed to raising student attainment, and experienced in teaching Modern Foreign Languages up to GCSE and A Level across a range of abilities.
The MFL Department
Languages are highly valued at St Cuthbert Mayne School and the MFL department has undergone rapid growth and improvement in recent years: the number of students opting to take GCSE tripled last year and there are now students in Y12 pursuing languages to A level. At KS3 all students study French, following a curriculum that values opportunities to explore French ‘cultural capital’ and authentic sources as part of the core topics. A French synthetic phonics programme is also followed to boost students’ confidence in speaking the language. French is currently the language option at GCSE (following the Eduqas specification) and there is capacity within the department to teach Spanish and Russian as well; as the department continues to grow and expand so too will the range of languages we offer. The department is well equipped with its own bespoke teaching rooms, and at GCSE-level and above students are given their own Chromebook, which gives the opportunity for more personalised and interactive learning in the classroom. We are fortunate to benefit from a specialist speaker FLA who is with the department for up to 6 hours per week to take out small groups or individuals for intensive practice.
Commitment to safeguarding
St Cuthbert Mayne School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be required to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service Check and references will be taken for all shortlisted candidates.

St Cuthbert Mayne School is a Joint Roman Catholic & Church of England School that welcomes all students from across Torbay and South Devon, regardless of their faith background. Our school community is made up of students and staff from Christian and non-Christian backgrounds, who are respectful of our Christian ethos.
There are currently over 900 students on roll, including 125 students in the Sixth Form. The teaching accommodation is of mixed age but well-resourced and maintained. In 2021, an exciting £3.6 million building project will start in the school, which will significantly improve the facilities for students and staff in our school.
It is an exciting time to join the school as we have started the next phase of our journey to provide an outstanding, inspirational and challenging education for all students. We have a relentless focus to ensure that our children get access to the best possible teaching through a vibrant and engaging curriculum, so that they live life to the full both now and in the future. This will be a challenging but very rewarding post. The school is committed to developing all its staff through regular coaching and a wide range of professional development opportunities through the South West Teaching School Alliance. If you are passionate about making a difference to the life chances of our children then we would love to hear from you.
The school was last inspected by Ofsted in November 2016 and was graded as Good in every area. The statutory inspection of Anglican/Catholic Schools was also conducted in November, and graded the school Good in all areas. Both reports can be found on the school website www.st-cuthbertmayne.co.uk.
STCM is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure & Barring Services (DBS), references and other employment checks.
