Full time, Permanent Contract

To start immediately/April/September 2025

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic teacher to lead this successful Department. Candidates should have excellent communication skills, a track record of improving results and a passion for music.

We are lucky at Verulam to have a purpose-built music block with two classrooms, 4 practice rooms as well as smaller rooms for music technology. We have a number of Mac Mini computers running Logic and all pupils have a personal device for accessing Google Classroom and other web-based learning tools.

At Verulam we see music as an essential part of school life. All students get to experience music throughout their time here whether it be listening to performers in assembly or taking part in one of our extra-curricular groups many of which are open to all.

Music Education enhances learning skills, communication skills, creativity, teamwork, discipline, cultural awareness, respect for others, and self-esteem through personal accomplishment. The Music Department is vibrant, lively and fun. We nurture our students, developing both their confidence and standards of excellence. There is something for everyone and every year an ever-growing proportion of our students enjoy an extensive programme of instrumental lessons and co-curricular activities.

There have been many different groups/choirs and clubs on offer and we are keen to re-establish a Jazz Band, choir, string group, Samba drum group, brass group, guitar group, Rock School, Junior Band, theory clubs and a Jazz ensemble. The post holder would have to support to develop ensembles based on their, and the pupils’ interests.

The Music Department has a tradition of cooperating with the Head of Drama to produce pantomimes and musical shows. Other highlights of the musical year include performing at the annual service of Thanksgiving and Dedication at St Albans Abbey, the service of nine lessons and carols and the spring and summer concerts.

Verulam places great emphasis on extra-curricular activity and engagement and benefits from outstanding attendance and exemplary behaviour.

Verulam School is a high achieving boys’ school with a mixed Sixth Form, which forms part of the highly successful BeauSandVer consortium. As a school, our core values of “Excellence, Character, Respect” permeate all that we do. We are located in St Albans, a beautiful and vibrant Cathedral city with a lively cultural life and a huge variety of restaurants, bars, pubs and shops. Recently named in the Sunday Times as the best place in the southeast to live, St Albans is surrounded by beautiful countryside but is still only 20 minutes from London by train and with easy access to motorways and airports.

The school has good GCSE and A Level results and achieved an above average Progress 8 score of +0.36 in 2023 for the whole school. It was judged to be a Good school in all categories by Ofsted in May 2024.

Verulam School is a member of the Ambition Education Trust (AET). The Ambition Education Trust (AET) consists of ten schools in Hertfordshire; three primary, one nursery and infants’, one juniors and five secondary. Our Trust launched in September 2024 following the amalgamation of two established Multi Academy Trusts (MATs), Alban Academies Trust and ATLAS Multi Academy Trust. As a member of AET, we are able to maximise opportunities for rewarding careers and opportunities for personal and professional development throughout our wider organisation. We work together within the Trust to share best practice, deliver joint training, promote the highest of expectations and raise achievement for all students.
