The music department is a supportive and encouraging environment where staff work in a collegiate manner for the benefit of the students we teach. Students are encouraged to explore numerous genres and forms of music, engaging with instruments and musical theory in all key stages. The curriculum offer seeks to cater for the existing interests of students but also expose them to aspects of the subject with which they may be less familiar, building their key skills. Each part of our curriculum focuses on performance, composition and appraisal. In years 7 and 8, topics range from the completion of a rhythm and composition project, to an exploration of reggae, to deepening an understanding of film music. Year 9 acts as a transitional year where those students who have shown great interest in music have greater opportunity to develop their skills, working towards the Bronze Artsmark qualification. At GCSE, we follow the Edexcel specification which can lead to both academic A Level and vocational pathway courses.
