Head of Music job summary

Are you an experienced teacher of Music with a passion for Music education and a proven track record of success, looking for a new challenge? Washwood Heath Academy has a fantastic opportunity for a talented individual to join an All-Through Academy Arts and DT Faculty as Head of Music. We are seeking to appoint a creative, enthusiastic and dedicated individual who is passionate about Music and is ready to lead a Department, or looking to broaden their experience of leading a department in a different setting. As we stand firm in our belief that staff well-being is a priority we do not unnecessarily add to workload or bring about multiple initiatives at the drop of a hat. Everything we do is rooted in research with a clear evidence base. As such we have: regular teaching & learning CPD following the Walkthrus programme and Instructional Coaching, a ‘feedback’ policy; not a marking policy and a clear focus on teachers as experts. The successful candidate will be capable of inspiring learners through their passion for the subject and have an excitement and drive for teaching and learning and a desire to make a difference to leaners’ achievement. Due to Washwood Heath Academy being an All through Academy, there is an expectation that you would be able and willing to support curriculum development for Music across the Secondary phase and support the Music delivery in the Primary phase of the Academy. Music is a popular and highly successful subject at Washwood Heath Academy, with a strong tradition of delivering good outcomes for students. We are very well resourced and have a music IT suite, with macs using logic, Sibelius and GarageBand. We provide opportunities for pupils to perform and seek a Head of Department with a performance skill set. Washwood Heath Academy is a relatively new All Through Academy (Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form) in the East of Birmingham. This is a fantastic opportunity to join the established Arts and DT team as Head of Music and contribute to a Faculty that seeks to provide a first class education for all of its learners. In order for all learners to achieve academic excellence, we deliver a knowledge-rich curriculum where teachers are the experts and their role it is to convey their knowledge and expertise to pupils. We believe that all pupils are entitled to learn about ‘The best, which has been thought and said’ (Matthew Arnold). Primary, Secondary & Sixth Form Our school is in a central location, with wonderful and enthusiastic students, amazing staff who always go the extra mile for their classes. Our friendly, family feel is part of the reason that parents choose Washwood Heath Academy for their children and a significant number of staff are long term employees. We are part of the Washwood Heath Multi Academy Trust which is a family of local schools located within 15 minutes of one another: 4 Primary schools, 2 Secondary schools and 1 All-through school. This will give you the opportunity to grow and develop professionally with a fantastic Academy Trust that is very supportive and collaborative with a strong sense of community.

What we are looking for:

  • To implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and knowledge-rich
  • curriculum in Technology for pupils across all key stages in the Secondary phase.
  • To support with the leadership of Music in the Primary phase (R-KS2)
  • To monitor and support the overall progress and development of pupils as a teacher and
  • Form Tutor
  • To facilitate and encourage a learning experience which provides pupils with the
  • opportunity to achieve their individual potential
  • To contribute to raising standards of achievement and maximising pupil attainment
  • To share and support the Academy’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities
  • for personal and academic growth
  • To be committed to the safeguarding of children
  • To play an active role in curriculum planning and delivery, providing specific curriculum expertise
  • and guidance and leading on delivery of key aspects as they relate to the subject area of Music.
  • Be accountable for the learning and achievement of all students following programmes within
  • the subject area of Music.
  • To liaise with Subject Team Leader colleagues across the Trust to support strategic development,
  • share good practice and plan collaborative activities
  • To assist the Head of Faculty in leading and managing a team of staff in delivering high
  • quality teaching and learning throughout the department. This includes the promotion
  • of student achievement as well as the maintenance of good behaviour and discipline.
