Head of Physical Education job summary
Due to retirement, we are now looking to appoint a dynamic and ambitious Leader of Physical Education who has a proven record in raising achievement.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our enthusiastic, committed and professional team to lead the subject across all key stages and to predominantly teach pupils from years 7 to 11.
You will have a passion for your subject, a track record of outstanding teaching and the ability to teach pupils with SEND. You will fully participate in developing Physical Education across the school and initiatives to secure outstanding teaching and learning in all aspects of school life. You will have a strong commitment to the wider pastoral role and wish to make a significant positive impact
on our young people’s lives, securing the very best outcomes.

Key areas of work will include:
Leading the development of the Physical Education curriculum to drive up the quality of provision at Westhaven School
Inspiring the quality of teaching and learning within the department
Creating and implementing a whole school strategy with support from sports coaches within the primary department and Head of school/phase
Actively promoting innovation and creativity with a SEN focus across the department and the wider school
Focusing strongly on raising levels of progress and attainment through accurate assessment of data which is used across the school, using a range of evaluation methods which align with the school’s self-evaluation processes, monitor Key Stage 4 attainment and liaise with examination boards
Focusing on developing the needs of the whole child
Teaching mixed ability class groups of pupils across the school, predominantly within the secondary key stages with SEND including up to Key Stage 4 and the Entry Level qualification
Participating fully in all aspects of pastoral care and wider school life, organising and attending of PE/Sports trips, courses and sports related visitors to the school
Working alongside the therapy team to build OT and Physio programmes into specific students’ PE sessions.

Westhaven School is a maintained community special school for pupils aged between 4 and 18 years who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Built on an ethos of family support, personalised learning and commitment to the needs of the whole child, the last 50 years has seen it excel in new enterprises and we have recently expanded in both number and age range.
