What skills and experience we're looking for

An exciting opportunity has arisen to offer a whole-school leadership responsibility for a new or experienced leader of physics, as we look to further develop and enhance opportunities for our students to develop their skills and knowledge across all STEM subjects. We are highly aspirational for our students and passionate about empowering the future ‘women of STEM’. The successful candidate will work closely with the head and deputy head of department to lead on the following areas:

  • Leading and being the expert on the physics curriculum in accordance with the latest research, guidance, and specifications.
  • Sequencing the physics curriculum, evaluating and developing schemes of learning.
  • Leading and coordinating all aspects of the delivery and quality assurance of the physics curriculum.
  • Modelling exceptional classroom practice to others.
  • Working in collaboration with other departments to share outstanding practice.
  • Leading on training staff on new curriculum developments and school teaching and learning priorities.
  • Developing and delivering training to staff to develop subject knowledge and pedagogical subject knowledge.
  • Leading collaboration with other departments to develop cross curricular and extra-curricular provision for students in STEM.

What the school offers its staff

Swanshurst is an ‘Outstanding School’ for girls with over 1900 students on roll aged 11-19 years. We offer excellent support and CPD for staff at all stages of their career, including the full range of NPQs as well as school-led instructional coaching progammes and progression routes for aspiring senior leaders.

The science department at Swanshurst is a highly successful one, making a significant contribution to EBacc progress scores that are consistently significantly above the national average. In 2023, KS4 science value added was significantly above national and in the top 28% of all schools. Attainment across all courses in KS5 is also strong, with Biology A level in the top 20% of all schools. We offer the full range of science courses in the sixth form and offer GCSE and A level Psychology within the science department. We would expect the successful candidate to teach physics at KS4 Triple Science and A level and all science disciplines at Key Stage 3 and in Key Stage 4 combined science.
