Head of School job summary
School group: 2 Salary grade: Leadership pay spine L14-L18
Contract type: permanent Responsible to: Trust Leader (CEO)
Core responsibilities
1. The quality of education, behaviour and personal development of pupils at the school
2. Continued school improvement including the professional development of all staff members
3. The strategic and operational leadership of the school, subject to any policies which the Department for Education and employment and the Trustees may make
4. The Head of School will carry out his or her professional duties in accordance with and subject to the National Conditions of Employment for Headteachers and the School Government Regulations
Duties and responsibilities
Teaching
1. Having regard to other duties, participate in the teaching of pupils at the school, including cover for absent teachers
Pupil achievement
1. Determine, implement and monitor systems for monitoring and improving pupils' achievement
2. Determine and implement standards of behaviour
Leading and managing staff
1. Ensure high standards of teaching
2. Lead, motivate, deploy and manage staff effectively
3. Propose an appropriate staff structure and define staff tasks and responsibilities
4. Participate in the recruitment of high quality staff
5. Ensure high quality staff development, line management and performance management
Curriculum
1. Propose, implement and review an ambitious curriculum to ensure breadth and balance for all pupils including disadvantaged pupils and those with special education needs and/or disabilities
Finance, resources and premises
1. Take responsibility for the management of the school's local budget
2. Determine short, medium and long term priorities for spending
3. Ensure the development, maintenance, security and safety of school buildings, grounds and equipment
Community relationships
1. Establish and maintain links with businesses, external agencies and the media
2. Represent the school to other groups and the local community
3. Encourage the involvement of parents in the life and work of the school
4. Promote links with other local schools
Governance
1. Work closely with the Local Governing Board to improve the quality of education at the school
2. Draft a school improvement plan annually
3. Work closely with the Trust leader to ensure a high standard of education at the school
General requirements
1. Be aware of the responsibility for personal health, safety and welfare and that of others who may be affected by your actions or inactions
2. On behalf of the Trust, oversee all issues to do with health, safety and welfare
3. On behalf of the Trust, implement all current statutory requirements, e.g. Disability Discrimination Act, Access to Work, Equal Opportunities, etc.
4. Undertake any professional duties commensurate with the grade of the post
5. Show commitment to the Trust, its inclusive ethos and equal opportunities for all in the school community, opposing strongly any form of discrimination
