What skills and experience we're looking for

Sawley Junior School is looking to appoint an ambitious school leader to take on the role of Head of School from 1st September 2024. This role has been created to support a smooth one year transition for school leadership following the announcement of the current Headteacher to retire at the end of the 2024/25 academic year.

The Head of School appointment is created with the intention for the successful candidate to work alongside the current, highly effective Headteacher for one year then to move to the Headteacher role within the school from 1st September 2025. This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual looking to be fully supported in taking that next career step.

This opportunity is ideal for a driven and passionate leader to join a forward thinking and ambitious school, with a rich, diverse and inclusive curriculum that fosters a culture of collaboration, lifelong learning, and personal growth.

There are currently 325 children on roll with an age range of 7-11. Situated on the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire border, the school is set in large, well equipped grounds which also includes a swimming pool. The school shares the site with Sawley Infant & Nursery School allowing the two phases to work closely together for the benefit of our children.

The environment we provide for our children promotes independence, self-motivation and confidence. Encouraging the children to show care, consideration and respect for others is central to our ethos and we work hard as a staff to keep this aim. We hope all children will Aspire… Achieve…Thrive…

We are seeking a Head of School who:

  • Is willing to learn and develop their leadership alongside the existing Headteacher
  • Demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • Can demonstrate resilience, determination, imagination and commitment to sustain school improvement
  • Has capacity to recognise and build on the successes of the school and formulate a vision for innovation and improvement
  • Has a clear educational philosophy and the ability to build on the exciting curriculum and wider curriculum opportunities afforded to our children
  • Has a track record of raising or maintaining high educational standards and expectations
  • Has experience of developing, implementing and managing effective whole or phase school systems
  • Has experience of successfully leading change and inspiring others
  • Has pupils at the heart of decision making
  • Has the ability to improve teaching and learning through the systematic development of teaching staff
  • Has the ability to skilfully use data to analyse, monitor, challenge and support
  • Has a passion for learning and willingness to apply this strategically to their thinking
  • Has the ability, desire and dedication to maintain and strengthen links with Parents, Governors and the wider community

What the school offers its staff

  • The benefits of being part of the forward thinking One Academy Trust where ‘EveryOne Matters’.
  • The opportunity to work alongside amazing pupils, staff, parents and governors
  • A supportive environment committed to collaborative working and high performance – joining a team of positive, skilled and hardworking professionals who thrive within a team focused atmosphere
  • The opportunity to craft and refine your leadership skills
  • An environment where innovation and creativity are encouraged
  • Opportunities and support for professional growth and continuous professional development, both in your role as Head of School and as an integral part of the One Academy Trust Executive Leadership Team.
  • An excellent staff assistance programme with access to wellbeing and health initiatives, including counselling and physiotherapy

We are very proud of our school and what have achieve for our children. We were thrilled when the school continued to be rated good in our most recent Ofsted inspection in February 2023.

Our commitment to continue to maintain excellence for our pupils and community is a key driver in our philosophy and we seek like-minded individuals when recruiting professionals to join us.

Sawley Junior School is situated near the market town of Long Eaton, half way between Derby and Nottingham. We currently have 325 children on roll and currently operate on 3 form entry organised into 12 classes.
