Head of School job summary

Internal Trust Candidates Only.

As our current Head of School is retiring after 22 years of service to Sidegate, we are looking to recruit a highly motivated and dedicated individual who will embrace the vision and values of the school.

The Head of School will work collaboratively with the Executive Head, who currently works 3 days a week, to lead the school on its continuing journey of improvement.

Sidegate is a 3-form-entry primary school in the north of Ipswich with 660 pupils on roll. The school serves a large catchment area with a wide demographic. The school has two Local Authority Specialist Education Units for pupils with a complexity of needs. These units and mainstream combined mean that the school has a higher than average number of pupils on the SEND register.

The Senior Leadership Team of the school consists of the Executive Head, Head of School, Assistant Head (Teaching & Learning), Assistant Head (Inclusion), Pupil & Family Welfare Lead (also DSL) and the School Business Manager. We meet weekly during school hours to ensure the smooth running of the school, to set a strategic direction for the school and to work towards these objectives. The school was rated good by Ofsted in 2022.

We are very well supported by The Active Learning Trust and work closely with other Trust schools in Suffolk and Cambridge. We also have strong links with local schools through pyramid meetings and the Suffolk Learning and Improvement Network.

We pride ourselves on the broad and rich curriculum that we offer to our pupils and our extensive extracurricular activities, which include residential visits in all KS2 year groups. Sidegate is a Platinum Artsmark school and annually achieves the Suffolk School Sports Gold Award. The work of the Head of School will be integral to ensuring that the teaching and learning of the curriculum is of a high standard and that opportunities are maintained and extended even further.

As a Trust and a school, the professional development, people management and wellbeing of our 110 members of staff are also high on the list of priorities for the Head of School.

Along with the vast majority of schools, our budget is tight and the Head of School will be expected to work closely with the School Business Manager to ensure that all money is spent strategically and efficiently.

We use PiXL membership to support the provision and use of summative assessment and interventions. We have recently introduced the CUSP Writing curriculum and are planning to introduce CUSP Reading in the Autumn Term 2024. Experience of these programmes is desirable.

School tours can be arranged with the Executive Head, please contact Toni Morris, Heads’ PA, on toni.morris@sidegate.net.

The Active Learning Trust reserves the right to interview and appoint prior to the advert closing date. With this in mind, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.
