Head of SEND - SENCO job summary
Identification and assessment of all SEND and potential SEND pupils, pupils on the statutory assessment process, assisted, where appropriate by the Heads of Faculty.
Maintaining and updating the SEND register and implementing the procedures required by the current Code of Practice.
Ensure that all appropriate staff read the Statements of Need relating to identified pupils, are familiar with the SEND policy and are aware of how to refer pupils in need of assessment regarding special educational provisions.
To liaise with the Heads of Faculty in order to effectively deliver the special educational needs service and to ensure that all pupils make progress in accordance with their IEP/provision plan.
To lead the assessment, monitoring and tracking of all SEND pupils’ progress termly.
Liaise closely with the Heads of English and Maths Faculties in order to maximise the benefit of literacy and numeracy initiatives to pupils with Special Educational Needs, and to fully exploit the skills of the SEND Faculty.
Work with a range of staff in co-ordinating and communicating services such as the educational psychology service, specialist teacher services, speech and language therapy service, literacy support service etc.
Enable the Local Governing Board, through the Assistant Head, to discharge their statutory responsibilities in relation to pupils with SEND and keep them well informed as to the implementation of the SEND policy.
Prepare the annual report on the SEND provision that is presented to the Local Governing Board.
Lead the contribution to the school performances and extra-curricular activities and visits, in particular helping and advising on participants with SEND.
Assess and complete documentation necessary for pupils to benefit from access arrangements in external examinations.
Line manage a group of Educational Support and be responsible for their performance management.
Lead a weekly team meeting with Educational Support ensuring good communication.
Provide all staff with concise information regarding SEND pupils’ needs/targets/methods of assessments and procedures.
Lead professionals regarding the communication of SEND pupils’ needs and updates to parents and staff.
Establish and co-ordinate half termly opportunities for staff to refer pupils for assessment and SEND support.
