Head of Technology job summary
The successful candidate will lead Design and Technology across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. The subject is taught on a carousel basis throughout Key Stage 3 and we offer GCSE Design and Technology and WJEC Hospitality and Catering at Level 2 and A-level D&T: Product Design. The subjects continue to be very popular at HBS with growing numbers of students at GCSE and the benefits of working within the 3 school Hitchin Consortium at sixth form. There is the potential to expand the offer and disciplines in Technology as the school continues to grow.
Applications would be particularly welcome from those who have a specialism in Technology and who can add wider experience, such as additional subject leadership in IT/Computing, or have previously led on whole-school STEM initiatives.
We see Technology as the central pillar that links together Science, Maths and Computing and are fortunate to have excellent links with local and international businesses and engineering companies who can bring STEM to life. Post-Covid, we want to re-establish extra-curricular STEM clubs, workshops, speakers, work experience and competitions and challenges that bring excitement and practical application to the subject. Whilst we are an academic school with the majority of our students staying on to sixth form and university, we are seeing the growth of apprenticeships as an alternative career pathway and were pleased to have a number of our students be awarded prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarships.
The school has an extensive range of dedicated workshop, studio and kitchen facilities with teaching staff supported by two specialist technicians. Workshops contain the necessary specialist equipment for resistant material and polymer fabrication and we are planning an upgrade in summer 2021 to improve IT facilities for CAD/CAM, textiles and introduce 3D printing facilities to support this exciting development in the curriculum.
If you are an experienced teacher or leader who wishes to take advantage of a new challenge and has the vision and drive for excellence then we would be delighted to hear from you. This is an opportunity for someone to take on the leadership of a strong department, shape the curriculum and develop the department further.
Applications from those wishing to contribute to other aspects of school life outside the classroom are particularly welcome. We offer a secure, supportive environment, a full induction programme for all new staff and continuous professional development.

Hitchin Boys’ School (HBS) is a high achieving comprehensive school with a mixed sixth form, which forms part of the highly successful Hitchin Schools’ Consortium. We have a history that stretches back nearly 400 years but embrace fresh thinking and a modern, vibrant curriculum. We have high expectations, excellent standards of behaviour and pride in our extra-curricular activities that lead to academically successful and well-rounded students who are well equipped for life beyond school.
Hitchin itself is a historic market town of approximately 35,000 inhabitants in North Hertfordshire 25 minutes from London by rail line and close to the A1(M) and M1.
The school population is a truly comprehensive ability intake and reflects the demographic of the locality with some 24% of boys coming from BAME backgrounds and approximately 9% of all students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Our ethos: At Hitchin Boys’ we pride ourselves on offering a warm and friendly environment where our boys are encouraged to fulfil their academic potential whilst developing a solid foundation of spiritual, social, moral and cultural awareness. Hitchin Boys’ School helps all students to achieve according to their ability, and we celebrate success in many ways other than exam grades, ensuring that all our boys go on to the next step in their lives with a feeling of achievement and self-worth. We are committed to caring for each and every one of our students and helping our young boys become well-rounded, successful young men.
Hitchin Boys’ School was judged Outstanding by Ofsted in January 2016. We believe that the inspectors accurately identified our strength as a school when they said: “The academy’s motto, ‘striving for excellence’, is reflected strongly in all aspects of school life. Pupils thrive because personal development and academic excellence are promoted equally well.” OFSTED 2016. The full report is on the school website (https://www.hbs.herts.sch.uk).
