JOB TITLE: Head of the Art & Textiles Department
BASED AT: Samuel Whitbread Academy
SALARY/GRADE RANGE: MPS / UPS plus TLR 2C
RESPONSIBLE TO: Senior Leadership Team Link
Bedfordshire Schools Trust (BEST) comprises ten flourishing academies and five nurseries delivering first choice education, from Early Years to Advanced Level study. Our vision is ‘to grow the BEST in everyone.’ We believe in the importance of high expectations, hard work and the development of a community of schools where each of us strive to ‘be the best that we can be.’ Our schools work together to add value and compete to continually improve
Samuel Whitbread Academy is looking to appoint an innovative, creative and passionate Head of Art and Textiles to join our close-knit, welcoming Department in September 2022.
The Art and Textiles Department is unapologetically ambitious, striving to be in the top 5% nationally, and the team work tirelessly to develop individuals who take risks and who develop a love of art and creativity.
The Department is led and managed by the Head of Department with two further subject specific Teachers. All Teachers are confident and proficient in art disciplines taught and we are rightly proud of our broad and deep curriculum offer. To support the Department there is one full-time and one part-time Technician and we also have our own Artist in Residence.
The Department is dedicated to helping students achieve their best and has a great team spirit of support, good humour, passion for the subject and professionalism. The work produced by the students shows individuality, a desire to grow as artists and we create an environment that enables students to springboard into the next stage of further education without prescription. Many students take Art at all levels, and go on to further study in higher education and progress with careers in the Creative Industries.
Art and Textiles is taught at KS3, KS4 as well as KS5 and has run successfully with students consistently achieving above national average results. Fine Art, Graphic Communications, Textiles, Printing and Ceramics are strong elements of the courses taught and all Teachers deliver these disciplines in lessons.
The successful applicant will support the department in providing an outstanding learning experience for our students.
Applicants must be willing to undertake a DBS clearance and the Academy must receive two satisfactory references before the successful candidate can commence employment.
This role will involve working closely with the students at Samuel Whitbread Academy and you will be engaging in regulated activity with children.

Samuel Whitbread Academy
We offer an exceptional academic and extracurricular experience at Samuel Whitbread Academy in an outstanding learning environment where students are expected to work hard and achieve their best.
In our last Ofsted inspection, we were judged as ‘Good’ with many outstanding features and over the next three years we have set ourselves the target of being Outstanding!
Our GCSE results are amongst the best in the Local Authority. We offer a well-balanced curriculum with plenty of choice to prepare our students for the next stage in their lives. Most of our students continue on to the Sixth Form, which is one of the largest and highest performing in the area - providing students with a huge range of courses designed to match the expectations of universities and employers.
Our pastoral care is exceptional and we have dedicated pastoral support teams for each Year Group. The Academy is also broken down into five houses, named after people who have made a distinctive contribution to our community. These provide the framework for the multitude of different competitions, celebrations and charity events that bring our school community together during the year.
Extra-curricular opportunity is a vital part of our ethos and we expect all of our students to get involved in at least one club or activity. There are a huge number of opportunities ranging from highly competitive sports teams to spectacular drama and musical performances.
We enjoy showing visitors around the school so please take the opportunity to come and see us during the school day, so you can see Samuel Whitbread Academy in action and we can answer any questions you may have.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
