What the school offers its staff

Samuel Whitbread Academy is a large, rural upper school with approximately 1,700 students including a Sixth Form approaching 450 students. The school is situated on the outskirts of the town of Shefford, in Bedfordshire, and has all the variety and energy of a fully comprehensive secondary school.

The size of the Academy and membership of BEST means that opportunities available to staff are incredibly varied and wide-ranging. We have a growing reputation for developing an exciting and innovative culture of research within the Academy and believe high quality CPD for staff and a focus on workload and wellbeing results in confident, compassionate and happy staff who strive to do their BEST.

The Drama Department is unapologetically ambitious for the subject and its students. We currently offer both GCSE and A Level Drama as well as BTEC Performing Arts in both Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications, all of which follow the Edexcel exam board. The uptake for Samuel Whitbread’s GCSE and A Level Drama qualification is strong, and students choosing Drama are extremely passionate about the subject. We showcase our students’ talents regularly through a variety of means, including concerts, plays, alongside an annual large-scale musical in which we involve the other Academies within the BEST circle.

We are a Department that is full of dedicated and hardworking members of staff all of whom share the same goal and that is making our students results the best within the Academy. We aim to challenge as well as support our students and teach them strategies to become more resilient learners. If you join our Department you can expect to work with a group of Teachers who are supportive of one another and strive for the best in both themselves and, of course, the students they teach.

Samuel Whitbread Academy

We offer an exceptional academic and extracurricular experience at Samuel Whitbread Academy in an outstanding learning environment where students are expected to work hard and achieve their best.

In our last Ofsted inspection, we were judged as ‘Good’ with many outstanding features and over the next three years we have set ourselves the target of being Outstanding!

Our GCSE results are amongst the best in the Local Authority. We offer a well-balanced curriculum with plenty of choice to prepare our students for the next stage in their lives. Most of our students continue on to the Sixth Form, which is one of the largest and highest performing in the area - providing students with a huge range of courses designed to match the expectations of universities and employers.

Our pastoral care is exceptional and we have dedicated pastoral support teams for each Year Group. The Academy is also broken down into five houses, named after people who have made a distinctive contribution to our community. These provide the framework for the multitude of different competitions, celebrations and charity events that bring our school community together during the year.

Extra-curricular opportunity is a vital part of our ethos and we expect all of our students to get involved in at least one club or activity. There are a huge number of opportunities ranging from highly competitive sports teams to spectacular drama and musical performances.

We enjoy showing visitors around the school so please take the opportunity to come and see us during the school day, so you can see Samuel Whitbread Academy in action and we can answer any questions you may have.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.
