What skills and experience we're looking for

Miltoncross is an academy at the heart of its community that has very high aspirations for all of its staff and students. We operate by the core values of Work Hard. Be Kind. No Excuses in order to foster a learning community where everybody values each other and everybody values the power of learning. We offer a supportive and collegiate working environment where we all have the same goal - outstanding learning for children. We are now one year into building a fresh, optimistic and sustainable culture where staff and students are always fulfilled because they know that they are doing their best work for the right reasons. Our systems and structures are designed to liberate staff and students, freeing us all up from the challenges of uncertainty and relentless workload which in turn enables creativity, excitement and essentially, it makes coming to school enjoyable for all! To understand this better, do ask to read our Blueprint for Brilliance which outlines everything we do, why and how. This could really help you make an informed decision about whether this is your next career move or not. We think it should be!

What the school offers its staff

Staff and students enjoy their days in excellent modern buildings with superb facilities. We are located on the West of Portsmouth and access is easy from the M27 or A27. Many staff commute easily from Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and West Sussex either by car or by public transport. As one of five Heads of Year you will lead your year group’s personal development, pastoral care and you will ensure that your students strive to live by our core values ready for life beyond school. You will lead a team of dedicated tutors ensuring that they are empowered, resourced and skilled in order to best support their tutees.

The academy has seen a significant growth in pupil numbers over the last year and each year group now has between 180 and 210 students, all of whom need a fabulous role model that holds them to high standards because they care for them. Your year group will be decided based on your others’ skill sets and preferences. Whichever year group you lead, you will work very closely with the year group’s highly effective Pastoral and Welfare Officer who has extensive knowledge of the year group and who is skilled at supporting young people and problem solving for them and their future. You will be the year group’s figurehead with responsibility for ensuring that their character development is well considered, planned and implemented. You will be supported to plan, oversee and implement appropriate age related activities such as summer camps, visits and trips as we all work hard to develop our students’ character and their understanding of themselves and others.

Further details about the role

While we believe hugely in academic performance, we are also determined that school is a place of learning beyond the classroom and this exciting area falls firmly under the remit of the Head of Year to plan and lead.

For this role, you must be a successful and experienced teacher with a real passion for developing young people and championing those most disadvantaged. Your expectations will be high and you will work hard to ensure that all students in your year group meet those high expectations. Whether this is your first such role or you ae experienced, you will be enthusiastic, dynamic and a very strong communicator whose ambition for self and others is palpable. We would be really excited to receive applications from anybody who is interested in this role. If you would like to visit the academy or would like further information, please contact our Deputy Headteacher (Student Culture), Hayley Forbes on02392 738 022
