Head Teacher job summary

To provide visible professional leadership and management in order that every child is able to fulfil their true potential. The Headteacher will be responsible to the governors for the smooth operation of the school and for ensuring that every child achieves his or her full potential within a nurturing and stimulating environment. The Headteacher will ensure that staff maintain high standards of professional practice. The Headteacher will build on the strengths of this school, its Church and community links and play an active role within the Thame Partnership of Schools.
Our Headteacher will be expected to:

1. Maintain and enhance our school ethos

The Headteacher will:
Maintain an ethos in which everyone feels valued and where each individual child with different talents and needs is encouraged, supported and inspired to achieve his or her highest potential.
Embrace relationships with pupils, staff, Parents and Governors that are built on partnership, mutual support, trust and respect, maintaining the schools “Open Door” policy.
Maintain Christian values and to encourage in pupils a sense of self-esteem, respect for others, kindness and an appreciation of the broader society in which we live.
Actively participate in all aspects of school life, maintaining positive links with the local community and church.

2. Shape the future

Work alongside an effective Governing body and supportive school community to further develop a shared school vision through dynamic leadership which inspires and motivates the whole school community.

The Headteacher will:
Demonstrate the vision and values of our school in everyday work and practice.
Actively shape the continuous improvement of our school development plan which is based on a robust self-evaluation
Anticipate and prepare the whole school community for future trends and challenges.
Develop and implement succession plans.
Actively engage with other schools, the Thame Partnership and other agencies to build effective learning communities.
Inspire, challenge, motivate and empower others to carry the vision forward.
Maintain and develop our Christian traditions and values for the future, whilst promoting an understanding of, and respect for, other faiths, traditions and cultures.

3. Lead Learning and Teaching

Responsibility for raising the quality of teaching and learning for pupil’s achievements within a successful learning culture.

The Headteacher will:
Lead in the design, implementation and monitoring of an enriched curriculum which inspires and engages all pupils, enabling them to develop lively, enquiring minds and acquire the knowledge skills and attitudes relevant to adult life in our fast changing world.
To keep abreast of educational thought and development in order to further good practice.
Ensure that the curriculum is regularly reviewed, evaluated and updated taking account of local and national initiatives, policies and statutes and ensure that the National Curriculum is delivered as a minimum entitlement.
Ensure the school continues to provide a broad and balanced range of extra-curricular activities.
Ensure that the attendance and behaviour management policies of the school are implemented consistently and effectively.
Monitor, evaluate, and review the quality of learning and teaching to improve outcomes for all our children.
Interpret and respond to data for tracking of pupil progress and the forming of appropriate teaching strategies for performance improvement.
Ensure that school-wide individual pupil assessment data is consistent and accurate
Maintain a 0.4 Full-Time Equivalent teaching commitment within the school.
Be an outstanding classroom practitioner, who will be able to lead by example and inspire staff to improve and develop.
Ensure effective transition from primary to secondary school.

4. Develop Self and Others

To challenge, influence and motivate others to expect and attain high goals thus enabling everyone to achieve.

The Headteacher will:
Motivate, inspire and encourage all staff and actively support and promote their personal development.
Foster an open, fair, caring and equitable culture whilst managing conflict.
Regularly review their own effectiveness, set personal targets and take responsibility for own personal development.

5. Manage the school

To provide effective organisation and management of the school and seek ways of improving organisational structures and functions base on rigorous self-evaluation.

The Headteacher will:
Manage the full range of staff, teachers, teaching support and ancillary staff and administrative staff, to achieve high standards through effective performance management, career development and engendering a good team spirit.
Implement the Governing Body’s performance management policy, providing guidance support and training to all staff.
Effectively delegate tasks and responsibilities amongst the staff as appropriate and ensure monitoring of workload.
Maintain appropriate staffing of the school.
Provide effective management of school budget in collaboration with the Board of Governors.
Ensure compliance with statutory regulations and requirements.
Ensure the school buildings, contents and grounds are safe in accordance with current health and safety policy, secure, well maintained and used to their full potential.

6. Strengthen the community

The Headteacher will promote community cohesion through excellent working relationships.

The Headteacher will:
Continuously develop the partnership between the school and our local church, welcoming the involvement of the local church team in the school.
Build and maintain an effective partnership with parents and carers, encouraging positive home-school co-operation and effectively communicating information about the operation of the school or educational matters affecting their children.
Support and foster links with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).
Maintain our connections with our other local primary and secondary schools in the Thame Partnership.
Take account of feedback from pupils, staff, parents and the wider community.
Positively promote and market the school to prospective new families.

7. Secure accountability

To be accountable for the efficiency and effectiveness of the school to the Board of Governors and all its stakeholders.

The Headteacher will:
Have lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection
Have a working relationship with the Local Authority, Diocese and other relevant partners.
Ensure the demands of Ofsted and SIAMS are met through self-evaluation.
Have full reporting responsibility to the Governing Body.

This governing body, the diocese, local authority and head teacher working with children and young people will have a responsibility for safeguarding and promoting their welfare. The successful candidate will be required to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

The head teacher is accountable to the governors for the standards achieved and the conduct, management and administration of the school, subject to any policies which the Department for Children and Young People’s Services and governors may make.
