The role of the Principal of the Khalsa Secondary Academy is to provide strategic leadership and professional management for the Khalsa Secondary Academy as a key component of the Khalsa Academies Trust. This will secure success and improvement for the academy; ensure high quality education and personalised learning for all its students and high standards and achievement in all areas of the academy’s work. The Trust and local governing body (LGB) will expect the Principal to lead by personal example in demonstrating a full and professional commitment to excellence in education.

The Principal will carry out his/her professional duties in accordance with and subject to the National Conditions of Employment for Headteachers and Education and Employment legislation. The Principal is accountable to the Trust and governors for the standards achieved and the conduct, management and administration of the academy subject to any policies, which the Department for Education and the governors may make.

JOB DESCRIPTION


A. Shaping the Future
Critical to the role of Principal at KHALSA SECONDARY ACADEMY is working with the Trust, LGB and others to further develop a shared strategic vision and plan which inspires and motivates students, staff and all other members of the school community and leads to raised standards of achievement. The Principal will provide strategic leadership and maintain the vision to ensure KHALSA SECONDARY ACADEMY meets its local and national objectives.

ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED
A1. To maintain overall vision and objectives for the school and policies for their implementation;
A2. To lead by personal example, provide inspiration and motivation for the students, staff, governors, and parents;
A3. To maintain the distinctive Sikh ethos and provide educational vision and direction which secure effective teaching, successful learning and achievement by students
A4.To secure the commitment of parents and the wider community to the vision and direction of the school;
A5. To create and promote effective relationships with relevant persons and bodies outside of the school;
A6. To advise and assist the LGB in the exercise of its functions;
A7. To create and implement a strategic plan focussed on getting KHALSA SECONDARY ACADEMY to become an Outstanding school, underpinned by sound financial planning, which identifies priorities and targets for ensuring that students achieve high standards and make good progress.

B. Leading Teaching and Learning
To provide effective learning and teaching to enable the students at KHALSA SECONDARY ACADEMY to become effective, enthusiastic, independent learners, committed to life-long learning. This will be achieved through a broad and balanced curriculum, which develops the whole child and sets high expectations so that students achieve their maximum potential. The Principal will utilise and further develop current strategic partnerships and also establish and develop new ones.

B1. To work with the LGB to secure and sustain effective teaching and learning throughout the school and to monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of students’ achievement;
B2. To determine, organise, and implement an appropriate curriculum for the school, having regard for the needs, experiences, interests, aptitudes of the students;
B3. To maintain an environment which promotes and secures outstanding teaching, effective learning, high standards of achievement and outstanding behaviour for learning;
B4. To ensure the quality of teaching and standards of learning are monitored and evaluated, ensuring that proper standards of professional performance are established and maintained;
B5. To monitor the progress of students, in order to set and meet challenging targets;
B6. To determine and ensure the implementation of a policy for the pastoral care of all students based on equality of opportunity for all; including promotion of positive strategies for developing good race relations; the Sikh ethos for the school and traditional British values
B7. To further develop the already effective partnerships links with the wider community, including other schools to extend the curriculum and enhance teaching and learning;
B8. To ensure effective partnership with parents to support and improve students’ achievement and their wider personal development.

C. Developing Self and Working with Others
To work with and through others, including KHALSA SECONDARY ACADEMY’s students, staff, governors, parents and other members of the community to build a professional learning environment, which enables all to achieve.

C1. To lead, motivate, support, challenge and develop staff to secure improvement and standards;
C2. To maximise the contribution of staff to improving the quality of education provided and standards achieved and ensure that positive relationships are formed between staff and students;
C3. To ensure the planning and allocation of support and evaluation of work by groups, teams and individuals takes place ensuring that there is clear delegation of tasks in a manner consistent with their conditions of service;
C4. To motivate, support and enable all staff to develop expertise in their respective roles through high quality continuing professional development, training and professional performance management;
C5. To ensure that appraisal arrangements are implemented in accordance with the appropriate appraisal regulations and or guidance for teachers and support staff.

D. Managing and Leading the Organisation
To provide effective organisation and management for KHALSA SECONDARY ACADEMY and to lead and seek ways of improving organisational structures and functions. Ensure that the academy, the people and resources within it are organised and managed to provide an efficient, effective and safe learning environment, managing available resources and ensuring value for money through effective performance management.

D1. To ensure teaching and support staff are effectively deployed and managed and particular duties are allocated to them in a manner consistent with their conditions of employment;
D2. To manage, monitor and review the range, quality and use of available resources in order to improve the quality of education, students’ achievement, and ensure value for money;
D3. To ensure that effective communication channels exist enabling all staff to receive information they need in order to carry out their professional duties;
D4. To arrange for a suitably qualified and experienced member of staff to assume responsibility for the discharge of the Principal’s functions at any time when the Principal is absent;
D5. To be responsible for the supervision and training of teachers during their induction periods in accordance with the induction regulations, and making a recommendation at the end of such induction periods as to whether such teachers have met the standards required;
D6. To assess (subject to approval) whether a teacher at the school who applies for a threshold assessment has passed the threshold;
D7. To report to the governors on the professional development of all teachers and advise the governors on the adoption (where necessary) to deal with the competency of teachers;
D8. To work with governors and relevant senior colleagues to select and appoint staff of the highest quality;
D9. To advise and guide the LGB on the formulation and adoption of their pay policy and each member of staff’s job description;
D10.To set appropriate priorities for expenditure; allocate funds and ensure effective administration and financial control;
D11. To undertake responsibilities as defined in the school’s Health and Safety policy.

E. Securing Accountability
The Principal of KHALSA SECONDARY ACADEMY will have a professional responsibility to the whole school community. The school is also legally and contractually accountable to the Trust for the school, its environment and all its work. Additionally, the Principal is responsible for ensuring collective responsibility in order that all members of the school community accept they are accountable for the contribution they make to school outcomes.

E1.To be accountable for the efficiency and effectiveness of the school to the Trust, governors and others, including students; parents; staff; and the wider local community;
E2.To create and develop an organisation in which all staff recognise that they are accountable for the success of the academy;
E3. To provide information, objective advice and support to the LGB to enable it to meet its responsibilities to the Trust for securing outstanding teaching and learning and standards of achievement;
E4. To report to the LGB on the discharge
of the Principal’s functions and affairs of the school;
E5. To present an accurate account of the school’s performance in a form appropriate to a range of audiences; including the Trust, governors, the local community, Ofsted, Regional School’s Commissioner and others, to enable them to play their part effectively.

F. Strengthening Community through Collaboration
F1. To engage with the internal and external school community, thus modelling the principles of equity and entitlement;
F2. To encourage and engage in partnerships and collaboration with other schools in order to bring positive benefits to the school and share its expertise more widely;
F3. To ensure the academy seeks creative ways to support the needs of its local community.

•To support the Khalsa Secondary Academy’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people as required under the Education Act 2002 and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2018.
•To ensure that the academy adopts Safer Recruitment practices.
