Head Teacher - Redcliffe Nursery School job summary

Redcliffe Nursery School is looking for a new Headteacher as our current Headteacher will be retiring after a long and happy time at Redcliffe. The Nursery School has a team of dedicated staff who are highly experienced, well-qualified and committed to providing a kind and caring place for children and families to experience their first formative years in education.

As a previously designated National Teaching School, Redcliffe actively values and promotes the importance of strong early years pedagogy and seeks to promote this with our children, families and staff, as well as within our local, national, and international communities.

Children’s rights are central to our practice. The learning environment we provide for the children is dynamic, intellectual, forward thinking and responsive. Our practice is research led and enquiry-based, with a strong focus on play and a significant emphasis on outdoor experiences within our stimulating outside space, the local urban vicinity and wild forest spaces.

There is a strong sense of belonging amongst children and their families at Redcliffe, and families feel integral to their child’s experience. We take great care in ensuring the children’s transition to the next stage of education is as smooth as possible so that they can go out into the world as curious, confident life-long lovers of discovery and learning.

On behalf of our children the Governors are seeking a headteacher who:

is warm and welcoming to children and their families and actively engaged in all aspects of the nursery school
inspires staff who are truly interested in teaching, and gives them the support to develop both individually and as a team
inspires confidence in parents through excellent communication
is able to identify what areas need addressing to make the nursery school exceptional, while safeguarding our ethos
is able to deal efficiently with the non-educational aspects of running a nursery school while providing the pedagogical leadership that is crucial to creating excellent early years education
has a relationship of openness and partnership with the governing body and seeks to build partnerships with all existing and potential stakeholders
Redcliffe Nursery School will offer you a:

warm, nurturing and welcoming family environment
team of committed and highly motivated staff
creative, inspiring and stimulating learning environment
well-developed curriculum based on research and practice

Redcliffe Nursery School evolved from being a purpose built Nursery School in the 1960’s to an Early Excellence Centre in 2000, to an Early Years Centre in 2003 . It became an Early Designated Children’s Centre in September 2003 and the Neighbourhood Nursery opened in May 2004. It is a local authority nursery school and is managed by a Head Teacher. The Senior Management / Leadership Team reflect the integrated services provided at the nursery. The nursery school is in the 30% band of the most deprived areas in England. We have a 60% ethnic minority mix and on average we have 12 different languages spoken at the nursery. We have had ten Ofsted inspections in nine years. In all we were judged `Outstanding` this includes an equal opportunities and mathematics subject inspections. The nursery provides places for 2, 3 and 4 year old's. It also offers breakfast and tea club places. The Nursery School is open for 39 weeks a year (Term Time Only). We have over 140 children on roll using our nursery provision.

The nursery building is set amidst a group of high rise flats close to the city centre and areas of historical interest. We use all the community space that we can and we have a thriving allotment and are very lucky to have access to St Mary Redcliffe & Temple secondary school swimming pool. Over forty of our families regularly use this facility. We also have the use of three forest sites. The Governor’s, Head and staff continue to develop the space for the families believing that the comfortable appealing space we offer values the family and children that attend the nursery.

Our specialisms include forest experience, food project and mathematics. Professional development is key and Redcliffe’s teaching staff are highly qualified in Early Years education practices and are in close touch with and, in some cases contributing to, the development of teaching practices for this age group on an international level. Many of our teaching leadership have completed, or are in the process of completing, masters level studies in Early Years education practices – a fact that displays a deep commitment to excellence within their practice. We are also a research base and support research projects and see the need for theory as well as practice as we strive for early years to be a true profession.
