Elburton School is situated in Plymstock on the eastern edge of Plymouth. Elburton is in easy reach of the city, Dartmoor, beaches and the A38. The school was opened in 1968 with 8 classrooms. Today we have 14 classes and continue to be oversubscribed and there are waiting lists for most year groups. The school became an academy in 2012 and was a founder of the Horizon Multi Academy Trust. This post has become available as the headteacher has been promoted to the CEO of the Trust.
The staff at the school are very dedicated to achieving the best for all pupils. There is great team work and co-operation and the successful applicant will need to demonstrate a commitment to a similar philosophy. Elburton School is proud of its welcoming inclusive ethos in which every member of the community is equally valued for their contribution. The new headteacher will be continuing the schools journey towards excellence. They will need to have a clearly articulated vision for the education that encompasses a strong collaborative attitude with all stakeholders.
All at Elburton School are very proud of its achievements. There have been two successive “outstanding judgements” either side of conversion to an academy. Academic attainment is high and the school has also had successes in other areas. The athletics team has regularly represented Plymouth. Our Football team has represented Devon and we are one of the first schools in the country to receive the Platinum School Games award for a second time. The school has received the International School Award, Health Schools and Bronze Art mark. The school has a strong choir and pupils have been successful in the Saltash Music Festival. Athletics teams have been successful in Devon wide competitions
It is expected that the new headteacher will have substantive experience of senior leadership in a school. They will be committed to the whole child and although they will have high aspirations for all pupils, they will not be solely data led. They will need to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of all primary age groups and curricular areas. The successful candidate will be expected to have an open mind to initiatives, be able to recognise what will make a difference and convey this with confidence. They will be expected to be approachable to the whole community and remain calm and patient when under pressure. Although the key leader within the team, they will not be afraid to take difficult decisions when called upon to do so.
The school has a planned admission number of 60 at Key Stage 1 and 62 at Key Stage 2 with two classes per year group. There are currently 427 pupils on roll plus a pre-school. There are 2 Assistant Headteachers at the school. There is a Teaching and Learning team comprising of 6 middle leaders and the senior leadership team.
The Local Governing Board is very active in the school and has a true understanding of issues that face it They challenge the school in an appropriate manner. The school’s relationships with parents are excellent. There is a very active PTA who annually raise well in excess of £20,000 for the school. The school runs Klub Kidz (for pre and after school care) and Stepping Stones (a pre-school). It is essential that the new headteacher is able to further develop the links between the School and the community.
The school is also joint lead of the Devon Teaching School Partnership and a key member of Devon Primary SCITT. We also participate in Plymouth School’s partnership which has provided many excellent sporting opportunities for our pupils.
Above all we are a happy school with eager and enthusiastic learners.
