Headteacher job summary
Lead Melbourn Village College to be an exceptional school for its community
We are seeking to appoint a great headteacher who will lead our school to excellence. The new headteacher will hold a clear vision on how to drive standards and be able to lead with confidence and credibility.
Melbourn is at an important point in its journey. Graded inadequate in 2023, the school has already made very positive progress. The school has a staff team in place that are ready to make rapid and sustainable improvement. This is a potentially career defining role and a great opportunity for the right leader. We know that Melbourn Village College has huge potential.
Two feeder primaries for Melbourn are about to join our trust; we particularly welcome candidates who would be enthusiastic about working in partnership with the primary schools and championing the potential of all-through education.
You will be supported and challenged by a Trust team that drives for excellence and believes in investing in and empowering their leaders.
This role is perfect for you if:
You have a strong track record of leading successful school improvement
You are passionate about education and driven to achieve exceptional outcomes.
You possess a clear vision for the future of our school and the ability to inspire others to share that vision.
You are a champion of high standards and believe in the power of excellent behaviour and personal development, great teaching, and a rich, ambitious curriculum.
This will be a challenging but deeply rewarding position. You will need to:
Develop a culture of excellence that empowers both pupils and staff.
Work in partnership with parents and the wider community
Lead a school on an improvement journey, making sure Melbourn becomes the great school its community deserves.
Whether you are an existing, successful headteacher or an aspiring head, we are interested in you if you have strong personal drive, a commitment to both inclusion and the highest standards and a passion to make a difference for a community.
You will be a trust leader as well as a school leader
As well as leading a great school, the successful candidate will play an important role in our trust. Our heads shape the future development of the trust and contribute to our strategy. We are collaborative and seek to work in meaningful partnership with others. This creates opportunities for our leaders.
Commitment to safeguarding
Our organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff, volunteers and trustees to share this commitment.
Our recruitment process follows the keeping children safe in education guidance.

Melbourn Village College is a successful 11-16 school with a strong community feel. At just over 600 pupils, our size enables all to flourish within a supportive environment, where each feels valued and empowered. Pupils are encouraged to continue their learning outside the classroom and a very high proportion get involved in the wide range of extra-curricular activities available to them. Our most recent OFSTED Inspection in September 2017 confirmed that we are a ‘good’ school which “has continued to improve the quality of education in the school” since our previous ‘Good’ judgement in May 2013. We are committed to improving what we do and aim to be outstanding
