What skills and experience we're looking for

We are have two vacancies for Higher Level Teaching Assistants to start in September 2024. The successful candidates will have previous experience working in schools, most likely as a teaching assistant or higher level teaching assistant.

The role offers variety across a working day. Some of the time will be spent working with groups of children or individuals to support their learning. Our HLTAs also teach whole classes for periods, working from plans prepared by the class teacher. Most of this is pre-planned and regular, for example covering a teacher when they are on their PPA (Planning, Preparation and Assessment Time). Our HLTAs also do first day sickness absence cover when a teacher is off sick, so flexibility is important.

What the school offers its staff

One of our schools aims is for St Matthew’s to be “inspiring, challenging and fun”. We want this for our children and for our staff too.

We can offer you:

  • Wonderful children
  • A supportive parent community
  • Dedicated colleagues
  • Modern classrooms
  • A positive, exciting working environment in the centre of Cambridge.

St. Matthew’s is an exciting place to work. Situated in the centre of Cambridge, just off East Road near the Grafton Centre, we are a community primary school (not affiliated to any church, despite our name) serving a very diverse community with over 37 different languages spoken by the children. Our children achieve highly and make excellent progress in St Matthew’s, but we know this is just one aspect of school life. One of our school aims is for St Matthew’s to be “inspiring, challenging and fun”, for the children and for the staff. We are all very proud of our strong, our inclusive ethos, the excellent pastoral care we offer and our sense of innovation and adventure. These characteristics are highly valued by our staff team, our children and our supportive parents.
