History Teacher job summary

School 21 is a pioneering 4 to 18 school in Stratford, East London that is developing a rich curriculum and a range of exciting pedagogies. This is your chance to be part of a growing body of exceptional teachers who are rigorous about the basics of reading, writing and maths and at the cutting edge of new thinking on real world learning, oracy (speaking), storytelling and well-being.

We are looking for an excellent history teacher who combines the rigour of A level and GCSE success with the creativity of developing rich and exciting collaborative projects. It would be an advantage if the candidate could teach wider humanities e.g. philosophy, sociology, politics. There is great demand for these subjects at A-level as part of Six21.

Over the past few years there have been some incredible projects with history at the forefront: an interactive exhibition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War One involved a collaboration between history and art and the creation of a trench filled with artefacts and literature. An immigration project saw children produce pixelated art to represent different identities and a spoken word project saw children speak out about women’s rights through a study of the suffragettes. Perhaps our most ambitious project to date has been a comparative study of the Russian and French revolutions designed by history and drama teachers resulting in a stunning immersive theatre production where the audiences were drawn into the revolutions.

School 21 is a very special and different kind of place to work in. We empower staff to find their voice and their creativity. We offer collaboration and learning across ages and subjects. All staff have more planning time than most schools and a tailored programme of professional development which results in extraordinary outcomes for the students. We offer multiple routes to progression through subjects and pedagogies. We believe strongly in developing the full potential of all staff.

Within this context your role will be to develop historical thinking. You will be trained in a range of pedagogies. These include Harkness discussions where 15 students debate and analyse historical texts around an oval table. You will become immersed in the language and techniques of well-being to ensure our children are ready to learn and thrive. English Language is central to everything we do at School 21 and the successful candidate will also play an important part in supporting all students in their drive to become avid readers, fluent writers and confident speakers. Our oracy curriculum and teacher toolkit and our collaboration with Cambridge University has resulted in a school filled with purposeful talk and thinking. You will have the chance to shape this exciting area of the school’s culture.

School 21 has built strong foundations in a short period of time, confirmed by our Ofsted which was outstanding in all categories. There was strong recognition for the ethos and approach of the school:
"Pupils across the school make exceptional progress."
"Pupils have excellent attitudes to learning, impeccable manners and show respect for everyone.”
“Staff morale is exceptionally high. Teachers at the early stages of their career value the ‘fantastic’ professional development and opportunities to learn from each other. Those with more experience said that they have become much better teachers since joining the school.”
Through project-based learning "pupils achieve remarkable standards of work and demonstrated knowledge and skills at levels beyond those expected for their age group."
“Pupils talk and discuss with a maturity and confidence that is remarkable for their years."
