About our School
St James is a small Church of England village primary school set in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside. We are a one form entry school, but are not currently at full capacity. At St James we aim to create an environment that stimulates and excites our pupils so that they can reach their full potential. We believe that each child should be valued as an individual and all their achievements celebrated.
St James CE Primary School is a part of the Vale Academy Trust.
We aim to provide our pupils with spiritual and moral guidance that reflects our Christian ethos. Our core values are Respect, Trust and Perseverance which were arrived at following consultation with the whole school community. These are reflected in our school rules:
Be Ready
Be Respectful
Be Safe
Staff
The staff at St. James' are dedicated and committed to promoting positive outcomes for every child, working closely together and sharing their expertise and talents. Emphasis is placed on professional development whilst promoting teaching and learning. Our staff regularly run demonstration evenings for parents on topics such as methods of learning, e-safety and story-telling.
Governors
We have a small but effective governing body with fresh ideas and a wide range of skills and outlooks drawn from industry, education, and the local community. Some of the governors are recent recruits, and we have just completed a skills audit to identify areas of training and guide the progression of The Governing Body.
Premises
The school is located at the heart of the thriving and friendly villages of East and West Hanney, and is based in an attractive Victorian building. This building houses three class, with the rest of the school being housed in a new block of classrooms.
We have an extensive field and a Peace Garden where the children can go at break or lunchtimes if they need a quieter space.
Community Involvement
There are strong and productive links with the local community, and the people of East and West Hanney are supportive of the school. We have links with local farms and businesses, and the children have made use of the community woodland and even visited our local Indian restaurant! We have an active School Association, and many parents come into the school to offer help in a variety of ways. Our Vicar regularly takes collective worship in school and we visit St James Church for significant services throughout the year. The Open the Book Team drawn from local churches offer dramatic Bible stories on a weekly basis.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Offering extra-curricular activities is a vital and exciting part of the life of our school, helping to broaden the outlook of our pupils and give them confidence. Participation in sporting competitions features highly across our school year with teams taking part in most inter school events. A variety of extra-curricular clubs support this as well as opportunities in art and music. School trips feature prominently, these have included visits to @Bristol, The Tate Modern and The Globe Theatre. We also run residential trips for year 3 and 6.
