Kitchen Assistant job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join the Housekeeping team at The Mead Primary School in Hilperton as a Kitchen Assistant. This post is a temporary position, to cover absence until the end of Term 5 (24 May 2024), with the possibility of an extension until the end of the academic year (24 July 2024).

As a Kitchen Assistant, you will prepare delicious lunches each day for the children at both the school’s Hilperton and Wingfield sites, and for children staying at school for After School Club each day. You will:

  • Support all aspects of food preparation, cooking and serving of meals
  • Ensure the health and safety of the kitchens is maintained, following routines and monitoring food hygiene and food safety to ensure high standards are achieved
  • Support the School Cook to produce food that meets the needs of the children
  • Work as part of the kitchen team to prepare, cook and serve the numbers of meals required on a daily basis, taking responsibility for food preparation as directed by the School Cook
  • Help prepare the hall for dining, including setting up tables and clearing away afterwards
  • Clean and sanitise all work areas, and wash up

To be successful in this role, you will need to:

  • Have experience of cooking
  • Have an understanding of Health & Safety requirements and food hygiene (or be willing to undertake relevant training)
  • Understand food hygiene requirements, and ideally hold a Food Hygiene certificate (or be willing to undertake relevant training)
  • Be happy to work in a team, as well as being able to use your own initiative

You don’t need experience of working in a school or professional kitchen, but you do need to be committed, professional and willing to learn. We welcome applications from anyone who believes they can make a positive contribution to our close-knit and high performing Housekeeping team.

Inclusion is the beating heart of our organisation, and we cherish it in our staff just like we do in our children. We are committed to creating a workforce that is reflective of our communities and welcome applications from anyone with the skills and experience to do the role they are applying to, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, disability or any other protected characteristic. We recognise the value and contribution every member of our staff makes to our schools, and in return for their dedication and commitment we provide:

  • A clear vision with purpose and values that are supported by all our staff
  • An ambitious and vibrant place to work, with enthusiastic staff and children in all of our schools
  • A highly organised and very supportive team
  • High quality professional development opportunities from Day One, including a National College and National Online Safety training account, where you can access thousands of training courses online for free
  • Unlimited, free access to the Employee Assistance Programme which gives all our staff confidential support and guidance when they need it most
  • A clear, comprehensive induction process

Hours of work: 8.45am - 3.00pm Monday-Friday, term time only
