What skills and experience we're looking for

Strategic Development

  • Contribute to strategic decision making, working with school management to share expertise and insight to shape the school’s vision
  • Set high expectations for all pupils in the phase, and inspire and motivate staff and pupils to reach and maintain high standards
  • Lead staff by setting standards through personal classroom practice, demonstrating different strategies to deliver improved pupil performance
  • Provide guidance and support to staff within the phase, working in partnership with parents and the community.

Teaching and Learning

  • Show an understanding of the school’s current systems for recording pupil progress within thephase
  • Oversee the use of schemes of work and their delivery, and measure impact on teaching and learning
  • Work with other teachers to review the curriculum and make sure there is continuity and progress across classes in each year group
  • Develop pupil behaviour and implement policies to help build an environment where high standards of learning behaviour are encouraged

Leading and Managing Staff

  • Take a leading role in developing and resourcing the curriculum across the phase
  • Develop the school’s approach to assessment within the phase, and lead strategy to improve the quality of teaching and learning
  • Take a leading role in inducting new staff and making sure they uphold expected values and teaching standards
  • Be involved with the monitoring the quality of teaching and learning within the phase (e.g. through observations, analysing performance data, etc.

General Duties

  • Develop own professional knowledge and skills through courses and reading, aligning with school’s ethos and current strategic needs
  • Attend meetings according to school policy, and lead where required
  • Lead whole school andspecific phase assemblies
  • Where required, prepare and deliver reports to relevant groups (governors, parents, etc)
  • Model standards in relation to the learning environment and general environment ensuring high standards are maintained across the phase

Sandal castle VA Community Primary School is a large, welcoming and inclusive school, committed to providing a safe, supportive and ambitious learning environment for all our children. As three form entry Primary School there are extensive grounds and additional facilities, including a swimming pool.
Located in Sandal, Wakefield, with the unique benefit of enjoying close proximity with motorway and rail links as well as open countryside. The School was established in 1686 and at its current site since 1747, more recently amalgamating with another local school in 2015 and extending to open new buildings.
The School is situated in an affluent area, close to the historic ruins of Sandal Castle (famous for its association with the nursery rhyme The Grand Old Duke of York) and St Helen’s Church- with a wide and diverse catchment of pupils from the Sandal, Portobello and Agbrigg areas. In the main, our pupils go on to either Kettlethorpe High school or St Thomas a Becketts.
