Languages Teacher job summary

Sir James Smith's are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated professional to work in a successful and innovative MFL department held in high regard by students, staff, parents/carers and governors. We would like to appoint a successful classroom practitioner who is passionate about foreign languages, and who is able to teach French to KS3 and KS4 and ideally able to offer some German and/or Spanish as well.

There is a consistently high level of uptake of MFL at Key Stage 4 at Sir James Smith’s School and both the department and the school are looking to increase the number of students opting for MFL in the future.

The successful candidate will have a clear vision of the role of MFL within the curriculum and how this can be developed in light of the changes to the education and employment landscape. The post holder must be a team player and be able to motivate, enthuse, engage and challenge students. They will demonstrate excellent knowledge of current thinking in MFL pedagogy and practice and be ready to explore and contribute to innovative and adventurous approaches to teaching and learning. The candidate will share in the production and sharing of resource materials for every lesson, so that MFL lessons are adaptable for the needs of each class. The successful applicant will be determined to make a difference to progress and attainment outcomes in MFL and will have evidence to support this.

We look forward to receiving applications from candidates who are willing and able to contribute to the work of our team at a time of great change in MFL teaching and learning.

Commitment to safeguarding

Sir James Smith’s is one of the smaller comprehensive schools in Cornwall. It is situated within a large rural catchment with approximately 70% of students travelling daily by bus. Student numbers are set to increase significantly over the next 3 – 5 years and this appointment will ensure the school continues to provide the very best experience for both students and parents/carers. Being a small school, one of its strengths is the relationship built between staff and students. This is a school where all staff know each other well and take a collaborative approach to supporting wellbeing and professional development. Surveys such as the Pupil Attitude to School and Self repeatedly indicate students feel safe and have a healthy respect for their teachers, they like coming to school. Last inspected in 2016 when the school secured a ‘Good’ judgement for the first time in its history, it is currently into the second year of a five year plan to be judged ‘Outstanding’, this appointment will make a positive contribution to that ambition.
