About the Role:

Edgar Wood Academy is seeking a skilled and motivated Lead Practitioner of Mathematics to join our dynamic team. This is an exceptional opportunity to play a pivotal role in raising standards of student attainment and teaching quality within the Mathematics Department. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to delivering high-quality teaching and be passionate about supporting students to achieve their fullest potential.

Key Focus:

  • Support the Subject Leader in maximising students’ academic development by taking responsibility for interventions.
  • Drive high standards of teaching and learning across the department through leadership, strategic planning, and data analysis.

Primary Purpose:

  • Help students realise their academic potential through an unrelenting focus on quality teaching and student support.
  • Foster a "can-do" culture that motivates and inspires students to aim high and achieve their goals.
  • Embrace flexibility and contribute to the school’s growth and overall development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accountability to the Headteacher
    • Demonstrate effective leadership within the subject area.
    • Keep the Headteacher informed of all issues concerning the Maths Department via the line manager.
  • Leadership and Management of Staff
    • Support the Head of Department (HOD) and Second in Department in developing subject knowledge.
    • Assist in identifying and addressing CPD needs within the department.
    • Support with interpreting data and planning strategic interventions for student progress.
  • Leadership of Learning and Teaching
    • Enhance and contribute to the development of formative and summative assessments.
    • Support the moderation and standardisation of assessments.
    • Assist in organising interventions and coordinating department trips and visits.
    • Promote outstanding practice and ensure the department is up to date with national teaching developments.
  • Welfare of Students
    • Foster high expectations and maintain a positive, inclusive classroom culture.
    • Collaborate with the Pastoral Team to support student well-being and remove barriers to learning.
  • Monitoring, Assessment, and Reporting
    • Be accountable for tracking and improving student progress and achievement.
    • Ensure assessment and feedback align with school policies and support student development.
    • Provide regular updates on student progress through reports and parent meetings.
  • Operational/Strategic Planning
    • Collaborate with the Subject Leader to support curriculum development and the transition from KS2 to KS3.
    • Plan and participate in school events, including Open Evenings and extracurricular activities.
