Lead Practitioner Science job summary

Lead Practitioner in Science
LP7 – LP11
Start Date September 2021

Camborne Science & International Academy is a friendly, dynamic and innovative school in the heart of beautiful West Cornwall. Science is uniquely placed at the Academy due to the extraordinary opportunities offered to our students. As a consequence, the uptake in GCSE and A level separate sciences is significant and continues to grow. In 2016, CSIA opened NEXUS, its Centre of Excellence for STEM and Liberal Arts (NLA) for 11-16 learners which is situated on its own unique campus. At Post 16, students from all over the county can study at Cornwall School of Mathematics and Science (CSMS), which is part of our VI Form provision. The aim is to develop young learners who are able to pick and choose from the best courses at the very best universities worldwide; young people who have a wealth of research experience from working with some of the best academics in their field of interest.

We are seeking an exceptional teacher with an unquestionable proven track record in their subject specialism as well as the ability to challenge the most able learners who aspire to Oxbridge. The successful candidate must have the ability to innovate, inspire and engage students and staff through their enthusiasm for science. You will lead the provision and enrichment in STEM subjects for our most able as part of the programmes offered at Nexus and CSMS. In addition, you will be responsible for developing a culture of research across all key stages and lead the delivery of the student research projects as part of our international programme. The successful candidate will develop strong partnerships with the professional community including Higher Education, and engage with the opportunities offered.

Science is a high achieving and dynamic faculty. At A level, results are outstanding and students make excellent progress. CSMS students achieve over 60% A* - A. The VI Form Academy offers Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Human Biology and Psychology and results are amongst the best in the country; as a consequence 25% of our intake at Post 16 is from schools outside of the catchment area. Our school has developed exceptional International Science and Mathematics links with top schools in Japan, Singapore, Thailand, China, South Korea, Canada and Australia. Recent collaboration has involved joint research projects, International Science and Mathematics fairs and competitions, as well as many significant student/staff visits and exchanges. The successful appointees will be encouraged to participate in this amazing and unique programme.

The person appointed will be given full support in their career development as we believe that development of staff is a key aspect in raising standards for our students. As these posts are on the leadership pay spine, there will be an expectation that the candidates will assume a whole school or faculty role which, in turn, will support future aspirations.
