Lead Science Technician
Responsible to: Head of Department
Grade: 4 SCP 7-11
Hours: 37 hours per week, 8am – 4pm Monday to Thursday, 8am – 3.30pm Friday
Term time only plus 10 days
You will oversee the efficient operation of the science department's practical resources, ensuring they are well-maintained and readily available for teaching staff. Having a genuine interest in science and good communication skills are essential to ensure efficient collaboration with staff, as you work together to develop and implement engaging practical activities that enrich the Science curriculum and promote student learning. Your commitment to safety will be paramount as you take responsibility for health and safety procedures within the science laboratories, ensuring compliance with relevant and up to date regulations and best practices.
Responsibilities and duties to include:
- Supervise the technical team support in the Science Faculty
- Play a proactive role in developing the skills and expertise of technical staff and in promoting ‘best practice’ in all aspects of the work requirements.
- Be responsible for Risk Assessments for technician tasks. Keep up to date on Health and Safety requirements, legislation and CLEAPSS advice.
- Oversee the maintenance, ordering and storage of stock and equipment in the department and safely store chemicals and up date chemical stock records.
- Ensure safe disposal of potentially harmful chemicals.
- To maintain and undertake reasonable repairs to equipment and where practical to do so or arrange alternative servicing by approved contractors.
- Maintain adequate stocks of consumables and ensure that a rolling programme of equipment replacements is maintained.
- Preparation of materials for science lessons across the whole school curriculum in a subject area including the preparation and delivery of materials and equipment for AS/A Level.
- Development and trialing of new practical methods, providing example results and highlighting hazards or equipment requirements.
- Photocopy resources as requested.
- Raise the profile of the science department by actively contributing to the science technician network.
- Support Specific SEN Students with a recognised high need with the department to enable them to access the curriculum fully.
- Advice and assist Students with all aspects of health and safety within the department and assist within lessons and with projects.
- Maintain appropriate Health and Safety accreditation to the National Standards as required for this post.
- Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job, participate in appropriate training activities.
