Lead Teacher - Cognition and Learning Unit job summary

The Cognition and Learning Unit is a newly established, distinct provision within our established mainstream primary school, supporting approximately 12 pupils with complex additional needs. Pupils will access highly personalised teaching within the Unit for the majority of the school week, alongside planned and supported integration into mainstream classes and activities for up to 50% of their learning time.

The Lead Teacher will ensure that pupils receive high‑quality provision that promotes progress, inclusion, wellbeing and positive long‑term outcomes.

Your Role

As Lead Teacher, you will:

Lead the day-to-day management of the Unit, setting a clear vision and high expectations

Deliver high-quality, adaptive teaching for pupils with SEND

Line manage and support additional unit staff, fostering effective teamwork

Design and oversee personalised curricula aligned to EHCP outcomes

Work closely with the Headteacher, SENCo and SLT to embed the Unit within the school

Support pupils’ successful inclusion in mainstream learning

Build strong relationships with parents, carers and external professionals

Play a key role in the ongoing development and evaluation of the provision

About You

We’re looking for someone who:

Holds Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Has strong experience supporting pupils with SEND

Demonstrates excellent SEND knowledge and inclusive practice

Is confident working with EHCPs and multi‑agency professionals

Has the skills, confidence and enthusiasm to lead and develop others

Is committed to inclusive education within a mainstream setting

Is proactive, reflective and excited by developing something new

SEND or leadership qualifications, experience in a hub/resourced or specialist setting, or knowledge of Hertfordshire SEND services are desirable but not essential.
