About this role

The St Bart's Multi Academy Trust, in partnership with Governors, staff and children of Abbey Hill Academy and College are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our hard working and committed team based at our Norton site.

Objectives of the post

To motivate, challenge and empower children and young people to achieve their potential by:

  • Providing a complementary service which enhances existing support provided by teachers and pastoral staff in school.
  • Providing support to overcome barriers to learning and to minimize the range of risks which may lead to disengagement from school in order to promote effective participation, enhanced learning and raised aspirations and social inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • To be involved in the identification of existing and potential barriers to learning and the identification of vulnerable pupils who would benefit most from learning mentoring, working with pupils and others to draw up and implement action plans, Positive interventions and IEP's for individuals who would benefit from mentoring support.
  • To establish 1:1 mentoring relationships with identified pupils aimed at motivating, challenging and empowering them to achieve their goals as defined in plans above and reduce the risk of pupils becoming involved in behaviours which could lead to exclusion from school.

  • To support a case load of pupils, agreeing ways of working together to develop and maintain trust, encourage engagement, identify mutual responsibilities within the mentoring relationship; maintaining the health, safety, protection and well­ being of pupils.
  • To contribute to the development and delivery of programmes which assist to develop positive attitudes towards themselves and others and encourage enhanced motivation and self-esteem.
  • To develop positive relationships and maintain contact with families/carers of pupils; keeping them informed of needs and progress and securing positive family support and involvement.
  • Oversee and support pupils to make successful transfers within and between educational settings and transition at key stages in their learning and contribute to the continuity of support throughout transfer and transition processes.
  • Maintain detailed records to monitor and chart the progress of individual pupils against mutually agreed objectives.
  • To have or develop a full knowledge and appreciation of the range of activities, courses, opportunities, organization and individuals that could be drawn upon to provide extra support for pupils; working within a range of networks and partnerships to extend support and learning opportunities and improve the quality of service to pupils.
  • To facilitate the effective transfer and sharing of information between local agencies, school, authorities and other learning mentors, and to be the single point of contact for accessing a range of community and business based programmes and specialist support services for example, the Social Services, Youth Offending and Educational Welfare Services, out of school study support and business and community mentors.
  • To contribute to the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of learning mentor provision in the school.
  • To network with other learning mentors and contribute to reviews of learning mentor provision and effectiveness, identifying good practice and sharing it with others in order to enhance mentoring provision.
  • To continue to professionally develop the role of learning mentor by attending appropriate and relevant training programmes.
  • Operate within agreed legal, ethical and professional boundaries and perform the Learning Mentor role within the boundaries of agreed line management.
  • Drop in at breaks.
  • Working directly with individuals or groups to raise self-esteem and confidence of students with a view to improving personal and social skills.
  • Regular outdoor working eg transport duty
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grading of the post.
