Learning Resources Centre Assistant job summary
Hours: 25-32 hours per week, Monday to Friday, term time only. Schedule to be discussed but may include an 8.15am start or a 4.15pm finish

We are seeking to appoint a passionate and imaginative individual to help instil a love of reading within our popular and well-resourced Learning Resources Centre (LRC). The LRC is in constant use throughout the day and the centre is well supported by a fantastic team of student helpers. The successful candidate will be able to build positive professional relationships with students and supervise the learning environment and resources accordingly.
The post holder will work closely with our Learning Resources Centre Manager and be responsible for helping to organise library and information resources to support teaching and learning throughout the school, facilitate independent learning and promote and reward reading for pleasure. The post holder will help to promote the love of reading and research (including digital) and will be expected to support library-based events and activities.
Main responsibilities will include:
- Providing guidance and assistance to students and staff on information retrieval and reading materials to encourage the development of independent learners
- Promoting an atmosphere conducive to reading and learning and supervising silent Sixth Form private study
- Supervising LRC users during the day and after school, ensuring that the centre is an effective learning space at all times and challenging poor behaviour when required
- Maintaining and recording accurately the use of library resources, including digital
- Effective use of library management software
- Assisting with maintaining a good range of fiction for all reading abilities and ages to help promote literacy
- Inspiring students to read widely
- Engaging with national and international events (e.g. World Book Day, International Women’s Day, Anti-Bullying Week, Black History Season, Pride, etc.) and promoting awareness and interest in these events via the LRC resources
- Contribute to the selection of resources to encourage diversity, whilst promoting an awareness of world, local, social & health issues
- Helping with organising and training the team of voluntary student helpers to support the day-to-day running of the LRC
- Provide support with IT equipment and printer
- Register ad-hoc students as and when required
- Any other duties as deemed reasonable and necessary by the Learning Resources Centre Manager
The successful candidate will:
- Possess GCSE or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English at 4-9 (A*-C)
- Have experience in a similar role
- Be computer literate with strong MS Office skills
- Have a strong knowledge and love of children’s literature
- Be compassionate and caring with an understanding of students with SEN
- Have the skills and confidence to be able to instruct groups of young people and manage behaviour
- Be resilient and assertive when required
- Promote self-esteem and confidence and help students to become emotionally healthy
- Have the ability to communicate effectively with all members of the school community and remain calm when under pressure
- Be positive and flexible, with excellent organisational skills and the ability to use your initiative
- Be able to adapt and react within a fast-paced environment, managing conflicting priorities
- Have excellent attention to detail, with the ability to work accurately and independently
- Be able to solve problems, exercise responsible judgement when appropriate and make decisions
- Understand the need for high levels of confidentiality, discretion and integrity in the school environment
- Have the ability to work individually and as part of a team within a busy environment
- Be an enthusiastic, committed and ambitious team player, open to learning and professional development
- Be a strong presence with a hardworking and proactive approach
Knowledge of Arbor and Oliver is desirable but not essential as training can be provided.

Overview
Leventhorpe School is an outstanding mixed, 11-19 secondary school and sixth form in the historic market town of Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. The school became a Business and Enterprise Academy in August 2011. The intake at age 11 is drawn mainly from the pleasant and prosperous towns of Sawbridgeworth and Bishop's Stortford and from the surrounding villages. Demand for places in the school is very high with over four applications for each place.
In 2016 the school expanded its roll from 6 forms of entry to 8 forms of entry in order to meet local demand. To accommodate our expanding roll Leventhorpe is undergoing an extensive £12 million capital build programme including a Science and Sixth Form block, state of the art Performing Arts and English block recently completed. In recent years investment has included a £6 million Sports Complex (sports hall, fitness suite, dance studio, all weather pitch and floodlit tennis courts), £1 million Learning Resource Centre, re-modelling of Design & Technology facilities and £150k annual investment in ICT provision.
The school places a high priority on academic achievement as demonstrated at the last full OFSTED inspection when the school was graded “Outstanding” in each of the five categories. All staff are expected to play their role in ensuring the best possible outcomes for each and every student. We are proud of our historic pass rates in all subjects, with a large percentage of our highest grades achieving well above the national average. Teachers, students and parents place a very high value on behaviour and care which helps to promote a highly cohesive and effective learning community.
Leventhorpe is also the lead school for School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) within the Bishop’s Stortford Educational Trust (BSET) and has strong links with universities. The school hosts placements for trainees in a wide choice of subjects and is a long-standing partner school with Cambridge University for PGCE.
Significant investment has been made in staff training to develop approaches to teaching and learning. There is a strong focus on developing high performing teams at different levels in the organisation. This has helped to form a culture with shared vision and values and a constant drive to improve learning opportunities for students.
Subject departments are organised on a Faculty basis. The responsibility for the preparation of schemes of work and for monitoring their delivery lies with the Head of Faculty, overseen by a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The school places a high value on assessment for learning and each student undergoes regular assessments in each subject.
The School upholds traditional values of uniform, discipline, homework, punctuality and polite behaviour. Each of Years 7 – 11 is organised into mixed ability tutor groups and overseen by a Head of Year who oversees the academic and social development of students as they progress through the School. Form Tutors monitor their form members’ progress and liaise closely with pastoral heads.
In addition, each tutor group is assigned to one of eight Houses: Barnard, Cutforth, Fawbert, Lawrence, Moore, Newsom, Rivers and Wilkins. House Leaders organise a host of lively house events throughout the year such as talent competitions, quizzes and sporting events.
An extensive extra-curricular menu is available to all students. A comprehensive timetable of clubs offers something for everyone, from Rock Band to Astronomy Club. A strong emphasis is placed on supporting students not just in lessons but also outside the curriculum. Staff and students' interest and enthusiasm in these groups is high. Music and drama productions are staged frequently to support the musical life of school. 10% of students are admitted on the basis of musical aptitude into year 7. Students are also encouraged to represent the school in a variety of sports.
