We want our pupils to leave us with the confidence and skills to be able to approach any mathematical problem they encounter. We follow a mastery approach, it is not enough for pupils to just be able to answer a question they should be able to explain what it is they are doing and why.
The Mathematics department is based in its own set of classrooms, which were updated recently. Each teacher has their own classroom with an interactive whiteboard. We have a strong emphasis on teamwork and sharing resources and ideas.
Maths lessons are taught in ability-based sets, and each year group has 4 maths lessons each week. Our curriculum is undergoing some major changes as we move towards a fully mastery approach. Year 7 and 8 have already started on this new curriculum and it will move up through the school years with them. Problem solving and reasoning are key skills that we are trying to develop in lessons and so all pupils are given the opportunity to practise these regularly. We believe in challenging all pupils and so teach to the top, with scaffolding where necessary.
